Thanks Tedd, for the example - this just proves that managing a list like
that is too complicated...
After all no iMacs on that list!

I went to Devworld and found this:

gestaltMachineTypeA constant that indicates the model of computer.

             To obtain a string containing the machine's name, you can pass
 the returned value to
            the GetIndString procedure as an index into the resource of
type 'STR#' in the
            System file having the resource ID defined by the constant
            kMachineNameStrID = -16395;

If I could get that string I could search for "Powerbook" or just "book"
and viola, I'd have the answer.
The reason I want this information is for licensing, BTW.
