Hmm.  The old style strings are still required for most toolbox calls and
for backward compatibility with FBII.  In otherwords, pascal strings are
the default string type.

Staz has hinted that there will be another variable type for extremely
long strings, however, you won't be able to easily interchange them where
a pascal string will be needed.....EDIT$(1) = t$ comes to mind.  Pascal
string only probably.  On the other hand if you are just reading in a
really big text file and doing something with the contents, then whatever
the large strings end up being will do fine.
