According to the info :

Within every Macintosh file that has a resource fork (not all do), there is
the Resource Header. This header is 256 bytes in size. In Inside Macintosh:
Volume I, 128 bytes of the header was defined as available for application
data. However in January of 1986, Technote TB 22 said that application
developers should no longer use this space. Most weren't using it in the
first place, but those who were stopped soon thereafter.
