Near Drowning
- NEAR DROWNING =========================
If someone near you is drowning, take action FAST.
- Get the victim out of the water.
- Have someone call for an ambulance. NEVER LEAVE the victim.
- Turn his or her head to one side and press gently on the abdomen.
- If the victim starts breathing, wait with him until help comes.
- If he doesn’t begin breathing, start artificial respiration immediately. Follow these steps:
- Turn him on his back.
- Lift his neck with one hand and push his forehead back with the other.
- If he is not breathing, pinch his nose, take a deep breath, and cover his mouth with yours.
- Breathe deeply four times in rapid succession, without giving the lungs time to deflate.
- Feel for a pulse for five seconds.
- If there is a pulse, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation with one breath every five seconds. Maintain an open airway and check the pulse once a minute.
- If his heartbeat stops, use a cardiac massage (see CPR).
- Keep up the resuscitative measures until the victim is breathing or the ambulance arrives.
