THE CARNAL SOUL
by J. Randal Matheny

I sought in Man to satisfy my needs,
I tried to make this Earth my fixed abode;
In Things I placed my trust, to the Flesh I sowed,
In these came Death, for all my evil deeds.

Yes, evil! Evil, as the Eternal spurned by Eve,
What first appeared so innocent and benign;
I worshiped, a man possessed, at the devil's shrine,
Of God bereft, with nothing left but to grieve.

What grief! Hot pottage for an absurd price,
A rash exchange to my eternal regret,
No tears can bring it back, no plea, no threat—
Such fleeting pleasures cannot long suffice.
