The voice of the lord
(Psalm 29:1-11)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on the voice of the Lord
1. The voice of the Lord is over (louder than) many waters
(rivers and waterfalls) . . . it thunders, v. 3.
2. The voice of the Lord is powerful and full of majesty, v. 4.
3. The voice of the Lord causes tornadoes, fires, and earthquakes,
vv. 5-8.
4. The voice of the Lord not only destroys, but it also gives life . . .
"makes the deer give birth," v. 9.
II. Meditation: on David's instructions on how to respond to the voice of God
1. Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name, vv. 1-2.
2. Ascribe unto the Lord strength . . . He is omnipotent, v. 1.
3. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, v. 2.
4. In God's temple, let everyone praise and honor Him, v. 9.
III. Revelation: on the works of the Lord God Almighty
1. God controls the forces of nature . . . "sat enthroned at the flood,"
v. 10.
2. God reigns forever as King of the universe, v. 10.
3. God gives strength to his people, v. 11.
4. God blesses His people with peace, v. 11.
IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Praise and glorify the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of
Almighty God, Philippians 2:9-11.
2. Ask the Lord to cleanse my sins and make me holy and righteous,
so that I may have fellowship and communion with God, Hebrews 12:14.
3. Thank the Lord specifically for His miraculous works in my behalf and
in behalf of His people, Ephesians 5:20; Hebrews 13:15.
4. Assemble in church regularly with God's people to worship and honor
Him, Hebrews 10:25.
I will extol you, o lord
(Psalm 30:1-7, 11-12)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on God's merciful blessings
1. Encouragement over depression . . . "lifted me up," v. 1.
2. Victory over my foes, v. 1.
3. Healing over illness, v. 2.
4. Life over death, v. 3.
II. Meditation: on the changes brought about by the Lord
1. Favor instead of anger, v. 5.
2. Joy instead of weeping, v. 5.
3. Prosperity instead of poverty, v. 6.
4. Security and stability instead of "earthquake," vv. 6-7.
5. Dancing instead of mourning, v. 11.
6. Clothed with gladness instead of sackcloth, v. 11.
7. Praise to God instead of silence, v. 12.
III. Revelation: on extolling God
"To extol" means to praise highly
1. Sing PRAISE to the Lord, you saints of His, v. 4.
2. Praise focuses on WHO GOD IS . . . His character and attributes.
3. Give THANKS at the remembrance of His holy name, v. 4.
4. Thanks focuses on WHAT GOD DOES . . . His miraculous deeds of
mercy and grace toward people.
IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Sing praises to Almighty God, rather than remaining silent.
2. Speak personal thanks to God for His blessings of grace and mercy.
3. Outwardly express my worship toward the Lord with joy, gladness,
and dancing.
4. Stand securely upon the truth of Christ's resurrection as the foundation
of my hope of eternal life, v. 3.
"Happiness is not a destination.
It is a method of life."
