Let all the peoples praise you, o god!

(Psalm 67:1-7)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on man's prayers to God

            1.   "Be merciful to us" (tenderly remove our guilt), v. 1.

            2.   "Bless us" (give us Your unmerited favor . . . grace), v. 1.

            3.   "Cause Your face to shine upon us" (radiance of God's presence), v. 1.

            4.   "Reveal Your way of salvation to all nations," v. 2.

II.  Meditation:  on the expressions of man's worship of God

            1.   Praising, vv. 3, 5.

            2.   Singing, v. 4.

            3.   Celebrating, v. 4.

            4.   Rejoicing, v. 4.

III.  Revelation:  on the reasons God gives man these blessings

            1.   So that His way of salvation may be made known to all people, v. 2.

            2.   So that people may be prepared for the coming righteous judgment of God, v. 4.

            3.   So that people may recognize that "The Lord God Omnipotent" reigns, v. 4; Revelation 10:6.

            4.   So that people may realize, in gratitude and thanksgiving, that God is the source of all good

things (James 1:17), and that they shall come to fear (reverence) Him, vv. 6-7; Romans 2:4.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.   Pray earnestly and fervently for God's:

                        1)   Mercy                                 3)   Presence

                        2)   Grace                                 4)   Revelation

            2.  Worship God by:

                        1)   Praising Him                      3)   Celebrating His victories

                        2)   Singing unto Him               4)   Rejoicing in His blessings

            3.   Witness to other persons about God's salvation, urging and encouraging them to get prepared

                  for the coming judgment.

            4.   Testify to others that God reigns, that He is the source of every good thing, and that He deserves

our reverent worship and joyous praise.

Let god's enemies be scattered!

(Psalm 68:1-26, 35)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on what happens when God "arises," v. 1.

            1.   God's enemies are scattered; they perish at the presence of God like smoke being blown

away by the wind, like wax melting in the fire, vv. 1-2.

            2.   God's people (believers; "the righteous") rejoice exceedingly and sing praises to His

                  Name, vv. 3-4.

            3.   God protects and provides for the helpless (orphans and widows), giving them the great

blessing of being a part of His spiritual family, vv. 5-6.

            4.   God gives His people a bountiful inheritance, according to all the promises which He

                  made to them, v. 6.

II.  Meditation:  on God's manifold blessings to man

            1.   God dwells with and walks with His people, vv. 7-8.

            2.   God sends plentiful rain ( both physical and spiritual) to refresh His chosen people, vv. 9-10.

            3.   God gives his word, and calls a group of His people to proclaim it, v. 11.

            4.   God provides for and protects His people . . . giving them the "blessed assurance" of divine

                  security, vv. 12-16.

III.  Revelation:  on the Lord Jesus Christ's part in Father God's plan

            1.   The Lord Jesus is God in human flesh, surrounded by thousands of angels, v. 17; Matthew 26:53.

            2.   The Lord descended into the lower parts of the earth (Ephesians 4:8-10; I Peter 3:18-20) to "preach

                  to the spirits in prison."

            3.   The Lord ascended on high leading captivity captive, v.18; Acts 1:9; Ephesians 1:20; 2:4-6.

            4.   The Lord "received gifts among men," in Psalm 68:18 is interpreted as "gave gifts to men" in

Ephesians 4:8 . . . God receives man's material gifts, but God also gives man spiritual gifts

through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Romans 12:6-8.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.   Bless the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, v. 19.

            2.   Bless the Lord, Who saves us from the enemy, vv. 20-23.

            3.   Bless the Lord in congregational worship, praise, and thanksgiving, vv. 24-26.

            4.   Bless the Lord for his excellence and strength, for He is more awesome than any so called

                  "holy place," v. 35.
