his light is sown for the righteous

(Psalm 97:1-12)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

 

I.  Concentration:  on the setting of the Lord's reign

            1.  Clouds and darkness surround Him (His mysterious presence and hidden glory), v. 2.

            2.  His throne is founded upon righteousness and justice, v. 2.

            3.  His fire and lightening consume His enemies, vv. 3-5.

            4.  His glory enlightens His people, v. 6.

II.  Meditation:  on responses to the Lord's reign

            1.  Spiritual vision:  seeing His glory, vv. 6, 11.

            2.  Witnessing:  testifying of His righteousness, vv. 6, 11.

            3.  Worship:  with joy, gladness, and exaltation, v. 9.

            4.  Shame and embarrassment:  by those who worship idols rather than the true and

                 living God, v. 7.

III.  Revelation:  on proper actions by the Lord's subjects

            1.  Loving the Lord their God, v. 10.

            2.  Hating evil, v. 10.  (Hating evil deeds, not evil people.)

            3.  Giving joyful praise and glad thanksgiving, vv. 1, 8-9, 12.

            4.  Receiving God's preservation and deliverance, v. 10.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  See the glory of the Lord with spiritual vision and perception . . . His "light is sown

                 for the righteous," v. 11.

            2.  Witness to unbelievers about God's coming judgment and the punishment awaiting

                 those who reject His mercy.

            3.  Offer unto God my joyful praise and my glad thanksgiving; worship "at the

                 remembrance of His holy name," v. 12.

            4.  Be open to receive with steadfast faith God's preservation of my soul, and be open to

                 receive with expectant hope God's deliverance from all my wicked enemies, v. 10.

 

 

The lord has done marvelous things!

(Psalm 98:1-9)

I.  Concentration:  on God's marvelous accomplishments

            1.  He has won the victory over His enemies, v. 1.

            2.  He has made known His salvation, v. 2.

            3.  He has revealed His righteousness, vv. 2, 9.

            4.  He has remembered His mercy and his faithfulness to his people, v. 3.

II.  Meditation:  on expressions of worship

            1.  Shout, vv. 4, 6.

            2.  Sing; break forth in song, vv. 4-5.

            3.  Rejoice (celebrate), vv. 4, 6.

            4.  Play musical instruments (harp, trumpets, horns), vv. 5-6.

III.  Revelation:  on all creation (nature) worshipping God

            1.  1.  The sea and its fullness (inhabitants) "roar" praise, v. 7.

            2.  The rivers "clap their hands," making a joyful noise, v. 8.

            3.  The hills are "joyful together before the Lord," v. 8.

            4.  The "stones cry out," Luke 19:40; Habakkuk 2:11.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Reflect on God's:

                        1)  Victories

                        2)  Salvation

                        3)  Righteousness

                        4)  Mercy

                        5)  Faithfulness, and

                        6)  Justice, v. 9

            2.  Joyously sing praises to His holy name.

            3.  Thankfully celebrate all His manifold blessings to his people.

            4.  Join with all nature in worshipping His majesty.
