Enlighten My Eyes
(Psalm 13:1-6)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on David's questions: "How long?"
1. How long . . . will you forget me . . . forever? v. 1.
2. How long . . . will You hide Your face from me? V. 1.
3. How long . . . shall I take counsel (wonder why) in my soul? v. 2.
4. How long . . . will my enemy be exalted over me? V. 2.
II. Meditation: on the spiritual answers to these questions
1. God will never leave nor forsake his children, Hebrews 13:5.
2. God will "lift up His countenance" upon His people . . . in
acceptance and approval, Numbers 6:26.
3. God will reveal his will and purpose . . . which man cannot
Discover on his own ("taking counsel in my soul"), Isaiah 55:8-9.
4. God someday will defeat all his ungodly enemies, Romans 8:31, 37.
III. Revelation: on why "enlighten my eyes" . . . give spiritual perception
1. Lest I sleep the sleep of death (die physically), v. 3.
2. Lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed against him," v. 4.
3. Lest those who trouble me rejoice, v. 4.
4. Lest I am moved (into fear, doubt, sin, and backsliding), v. 4.IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Trust in God's mercy, v. 5.
2. Rejoice in God's salvation, v. 5.
3. Sing praises to the Lord, v. 6.
4. Thank the Lord for His bountiful provision, v. 6.
Atheists Are Fools!
(Psalm 14:1-7)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on who are the fools in God's sight
1. Fools deny that there is a God, v. 1.
2. Fools are corrupt, abominable, wicked, and evil, vv. 1, 3.
3. Fools do not understand spiritual things, nor do they seek
God, vv. 2. 4.
5. Fools live in ignorance and die in fear . . . unprepared for
eternity, v. 5.
II. Meditation: on the implications of these truths
1. Although fools deny the existence of Almighty God, they make and
bow down to other gods . . . power, prestige, money, popularity, etc.
2. A belief in the God of Righteousness, Holiness, Justice, and Mercy
is the basic foundation of a lasting society or nation; if there is no
God to judge man by His holy standards, then there is nothing to
restrain corruption and wickedness.
3. Arrogance and pride are signs of spiritual blindness; so-called "wise"
intellectuals can never comprehend the truths of God, I Corinthians 2:14
. . . nevertheless, God watches them, v. 2.
4. Persons who live without God and who die without God face a terrible,
fearful future In hell.
III. Revelation: on the contrasts with God's ("wise") people
1. God is present . . . "with the generations of the righteous," v. 5.
2. God is the refuge (shelter; protection) of the poor and oppressed, v. 6.
3. God is the Savior who delivers His people, v. 7.
4. God brings joy and gladness to His people, v. 7.
IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Daily abide in the reality of the presence of God.
2. Come to God for help and protection in times of trouble.
3. Receive and proclaim Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world . . . our
only hope for spiritual deliverance.
4. Worship and serve God with gladness and rejoicing.
"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but
often we look so long at the closed door that we do
not see the one which has opened for us."
