The god-who-forgives

(Psalm 99:1-9)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the God Who reigns

            1.  He dwells between the cherubim (golden angels on the lid of the Ark

of the Covenant) . . . the "mercy seat" . . . revealing and representing

God sitting on His throne being worshipped and served by angels, v. 1.

            2.  He is great and high (exalted) above all the peoples (human nations), v. 2.

            3.  His name is great and awesome, v. 3.

            4.  He is holy . . . separate from mankind and pure from sin, vv. 3, 5.

II.  Meditation:  on the works of the God Who reigns (v. 4)

            1.  He strengthens those who are members of the royal family . . . believers.

(God is called "The king's strength).

            2.  He has "established equity" . . . creating every person spiritually equal

                 before Him.

            3.  He "executed justice" . . . judging mankind with truth and fairness.

            4.  He "executed righteousness" . . . always making the right decisions and

                 always doing the right things.

III.  Revelation:  on persons to whom and through whom God revealed Himself

            1.  Moses – the deliverer and law-giver, v. 6.

            2.  Aaron – the original high priest of the nation, v. 6.

            3.  Samuel – the prophet who spoke for God and anointed the first two kings

of Israel (Saul and David), v. 6.

            4.  David – the shepherd boy, song-writer, giant-killer who became Israel's

                 "Messianic" king . . . ancestor of Christ, v. 4.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  In repentance, confession, and faith, pray to the "God-Who-Forgives" . . .

And receive His mercy, grace, and cleansing, v. 8.

            2.  Learn from God's discipline upon me for my sins against Him, v. 8.

            3.  Stand silently with fear and trembling before the awesome, Almighty God, v. 1,

and exalt the Lord's holy name, vv. 5, 9.

            4.  Worship Jesus Christ, our Deliverer (like Moses), our High Priest (like Aaron),

our Prophet and Anointer (like Samuel), and our victorious King (like David).

God's gates and courts

(Psalm 100:1-5)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on Gates and Courts

            1.  "Gates" references:

                        1)  Psalm 24:7              3)  Matthew 7:13

                        2)  Psalm 118:19-20      4)  Revelation 21:12

            2.  "Courts" references:

                        1)  Exodus 27:18           3)  Psalm 84:1-4

                        2)  Psalm 65:4              4)  II Chronicles 4:9

II.  Meditation:  on thanksgiving and praise

Which comes first, thanks or praise?  Usually they occur like this:  first we

receive God's blessings; next we recognize the source (James 1:17); then

we thank Him; then we receive a revelation that God's gifts reveal His

character (who He is); finally, we worship and praise Him, I John 4:19.

            1.  A "gate" = the entrance to (and the ancient place of) power and authority;

                 Of legal transactions and judicial justice.  (See II Timothy 4:18; John 1:12;

                 14:6; 10:7,9; II Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 6:19-20; 9:3; 10:20.)

            2.  At the "gate," believers thank God for what He has done for them, v. 5.

            3.  A "court" = the residence of a sovereign King (and spiritually; the dwelling

place where God manifests his presence).

            4.  At the "court," believers praise God for Who He is . . . "bless His name," vv. 3-4.

III.  Revelation:  on reasons to praise and thank God

            1.  We praise Him because (v. 3):

                        1)  The Lord is God (Covenant name                3)  He is the provider

                        2)  He is the Creator                                          4)  He is the shepherd

            2.  We thank Him because (v. 5):

                        1)  He is good                                                   3)  He is truth

                        2)  He is merciful,                                             4)  He is eternal

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Worship God with shouts of praise, v. 1.

            2.  Serve God faithfully, v. 2.

            3.  Approach him with glad, joyful singing, v. 3.

            4.  Enjoy fellowship and communion in His presence, can come to "know" Him

                 personally and intimately, vv. 2-3.

"An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."
