Guardian angels

(Psalm 91:1-16)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the dwelling place of the Most High

            1.  It is a secret place . . . invisible to human observers, v. 1 . . . "closet"

     as in Matthew 6:6.

            2.  It is a place where man can abide near to Almighty God, v. 1, John 15.

            3.  It is a place of refuge and safety, v. 2.

            4.  It is a place of protection:

                        1)  Deliverance from perilous pestilence (deadly disease), v. 3.

                        2)  Covering (warmth) under the "wings" of God, v. 4.

                        3)  Shields of truth to protect from Satan's darts, v. 4.

                        4)  Confident faith (without fear), vv. 5-6.

II.  Meditation:  on the results of dwelling in God's "place"

            1.  Survival, although thousands fall around us, v. 7.

            2.  Spiritual perception to comprehend God's just rewards to the wicked, v. 8.

            3.  Spiritual vision and understanding to see God's blessings of life and health

upon those who trust in Him, vv. 9-10.

            4.  Guardian angels sent by God the Father to keep (protect) believers in all their

                 ways, v. 11. (See Hebrews 13:2)

III.  Revelation:  on the tasks assigned to guardian angels

            1.  Physical protection, vv. 11-12.

            2.  Victory in battle over Satan's forces mentioned in verse 13:  lion (I Peter 5:8)

                 and serpent (Revelation 20:2).

            3.  Exaltation of the saints:  "set him on high," v.14; Ephesians 2:6.

            4.  Answered prayers made to God:  deliverance, honor, a satisfying long life, and

                 "seeing" of salvation, vv. 15-16.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to, . . .

            1.  Meet God in a "secret place" daily to spend some quiet time to communing with

                 Him.

            2.  Depend upon God, in faith, confidently believing that He is my protection, my

                 covering, and my shield.

            3.  Cultivate listening to God and allowing Him to give me eyes to "see beyond sight"

. . . to receive spiritual vision and insight.

            4.  Believe that God not only knows me personally, but He also has assigned a guardian

angel to watch over me, Matthew 18:10.

            3.  Declaring God's loving-kindness in the morning (looking forward with faith

in His grace for the coming day) and His faithfulness every night (looking

with gratitude for His manifold blessings during the past day), v. 2.

            4.  Rejoicing in God's triumphant works in my life, v. 4.

            1.  To continue growing and flourishing spiritually like a palm tree (providing shade

and food), and like a cedar tree (representing stability and eternal life), v. 12.

            2.  To flourish spiritually in the place where God has planted me, v. 13.

            3.  To bear fruit in old age . . . fresh, beneficial fruit, v. 14.

            4.  To declare, through my many years of walking with God, that He is righteous, and

that He is my rock of salvation, v. 15.
