God's cup of red wine

(Psalm 75:1-10)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on God's wrath being like an alcoholic beverage (v. 8)

            1.   The cup of red wine contains a curse, Proverbs 23:31-32.

            2.   In God's hand, it is a cup of suffering, Matthew 20:22-23.

            3.   At the proper time, when it is "fully mixed," God will pour out this cup

of wrath upon those who reject Him, Revelation 14:10; 16:19.

            4.   The wicked shall be forced to experience the full extent of God's punishment

upon them ("drain and drink it down") . . . external damnation in hell.

II.  Meditation:  on counting the blessings of God, which include . . .

            1.   His wondrous works, v. 1.

            2.   The nearness of His name . . . His intimate presence with believers, v. 1.

            3.   His righteous judgments, vv. 2, 7-8.

            4.   His unshakeable, secure foundation, v. 2.

            5.   His exaltation of His people; victory, vv. 6-7.

            6.   His punishment upon the wicked, vv. 8, 10.

            7.   His strength ("horns") given to his people, while His enemies lose their strength

                  ("cut off") , v. 10.

III.  Revelation:  on a believer's proper response to these blessings from God

            1.   Thank Him for His wondrous works and His omnipresence, v. 1.

            2.   Testify to the wicked about God's coming judgment, v. 4.

            3.   Be teachable before God, not stubborn and rebellious ("stiff necked") v. 5.

            4.   Praise the name of the Lord forever! v. 9.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.   Recognize, list, and thank God for His many blessings toward me.

            2.   Consider the horrors of hell, and warn sinners about it.

            3.   Be open-heartedly receptive to the spiritual impressions which God sends to

guide my pathway; avoid stubbornly going my own way!

            4.   Praise God continuously  . . . He is my strength and exaltation!

                  of His faithful people.

            2.   Worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Who is majestic and worthy of

                  my sincere praise.

            3.   Bow in humble submission before the Almighty God of the Universe, who alone

is awesome in power and in glory.

            4.   Honor the Holy and Righteous Father in Heaven with my heart-felt love, with my

fulfilled vows, with my faithful service, and with my most generous gifts.
