"Seeing" the Resurrected christ

(Luke 24:1-53)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the contents of this chapter

        1.   Two angels appeared to tell the women that Christ was

              risen, vv. 1-12.

2.      Jesus spoke to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, vv. 13-35.
3.      Jesus appeared to the disciples, explained the Scriptures, and

promised to send the Holy Spirit, vv. 36-48.

4.      Jesus ascended into heaven; the disciples joyfully praised God,

        vv. 49-53.

II.  Observations:  on the fact that only believers saw the resurrected Christ

(See Acts 1:1-3; 3:15; 10:39-41; I Corinthians 15:1-8; 2:9-10, 14.)

III.  Meditation:  on the two disciples on the Emmaus Road

1.      They opened their hearts to Jesus, Luke 24:17-24; they were

discussing spiritual things but without understanding.

2.      They listened to Jesus' teaching from Scripture, Luke 24:25-27;

they were foolish, slow, faithless, and unlearned, but Jesus

taught them the Scriptures concerning Himself.

3.      They urgently invited Him to stay and fellowship with them,

Luke 24;28-29; Jesus is a gentleman, not forcing Himself upon us

        Revelation 3:20.

4.      As they prayed with Him, their eyes were opened, Luke 24:3-32.

IV.  Revelation:  on the spiritual implications seen here

1.      Only believers can "see" Jesus; unbelief is spiritual blindness;

"we walk by faith, not by sight," II Corinthians 5:7; not "seeing is

        believing" but "believing is seeing!"

2.      His resurrection is not a myth, but a fact proven by many eyewitnesses

        . . . "infallible" witnesses, Acts 1:3.

3.      The believers who saw Him were given the mission to "witness" . . . to

witness (see) and to witness (testify).

4.      If we seek God's revelation, He will spiritually enlighten us.

(See Elijah's servant in II Kings 6:17.)

V.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

        1.   Focus on spiritual things:  open my heart to Jesus; tell Him my burdens,

              hopes, and desires.

2.      Be willing to share my dreams and disappointments with Jesus, receiving

His teachings through studying and meditating on His Word.

3.      Be teachable as He explains/reveals Scripture to me.  Sincerely and

urgently invite His intimate presence so that I may have spiritual fellowship

with Him.  (See I John 1:7)

4.      Pray with Him . . . seeing with eyes of faith His will and His way.  "He lives

        to make intercession, Hebrews 7:25.

We have finished the book of Luke.  We will begin the book of John

Of His Fullness We Have All Received

(John 1:1-15)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the contents of this chapter

        1.   Jesus is the eternal Word, the source of light and life, vv. 1-5.

        2.   John the Baptist witnessed about Jesus, the true Light, vv. 6-13.

        3.   The Word became flesh; Jesus is full of grace and truth . . . He

is the Son of God, vv. 14-18.

        4.   John was a voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for

              the coming Messiah, vv. 19-28.

5.      John proclaimed Jesus as the "Lamb of God" and bore witness of

seeing the Holy Spirit descend upon Him at His baptism, vv. 29-34.

6.      Andrew brought his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, vv. 35-42.
7.      Phillip brought Nathanael to Jesus, vv. 43-51.

II.  Meditation:  on verse 16

"And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace," John 1:16.

(Fullness is connected to the blessing of the gospel, Romans 15:29)

III.  Observations:  on the word "fullness" in Ephesians

        1.  Ephesians 1:10 – "That in the dispensation of the fullness of the times,

He might gather together in one all things in Christ." (See Galatians 4:4)

2.      Ephesians 1:23 – (Church) . . . "which is His body, the fullness of Him

who fills all in all."  (See Colossians 1:19; Psalm 24:1; I Corinthians 10:26,28)

3.      Ephesians 3:19 – "That you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
4.      Ephesians 4:13 – "Till we all come . . . to the measure of the stature of the

        fullness of Christ."

IV.  Revelation:  on the spiritual truths seen here

        1.   God works on a timetable:  "in the fullness of time."

        2.   Jesus is the fullness of the Godhead.

        3.   Jesus desires that His disciples be filled with the fullness of God.

        4.   Jesus wants believers to grow spiritually toward the goal of attaining the

              fullness of Christ.

V.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

        1.   Recognize that God works on His own timetable, and cultivate patience

until God's perfect time comes for Him to work in my life.

2.      Acknowledge Jesus Christ as God, and worship Him . . . for all God's

        fullness dwells in Him.

3.      Be "filled with all the fullness of God"  . . . "Be filled with the Spirit,"

        Ephesians 5:18.

4.      "Abide" (John 15:4-5) in Jesus so that I may grow toward the fullness

        of His spirituality and character.

"You will show me the path of life; in your

presence is fullness of joy; at your right

hand are pleasures forevermore,"

Psalm 16:11.
