Calls to worship

(Psalm 95:1-11)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the various calls to worship God

            1.  O come, let us sing, v. 1.

            2.  Let us shout joyfully to him with Psalms, vv. 1, 2.

            3.  Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, v. 2.

            4.  O come, let us worship and bow down . . . kneel before the Lord, v. 6.

II.  Meditation:  on who God is

            1.  God is our Lord . . . our Master, v. 1.

            2.  God is our assurance and security of salvation . . . our Rock, v. 6.

            3.  God is our present with us, v. 2.

            4.  God is our Creator . . . our Maker, v. 6.

III.  Revelation:  on reasons God deserves to be worshipped

            1.  Because God is the great God, the King above all gods, v. 3.

            2.  Because God is the Creator and owner of the universe, vv. 4-5.

            3.  Because God watches over His people as a shepherd watches over his sheep, v. 7.

            4.  Because God is the righteous judge . . . noticing our hardened hearts and our sinful

rebellion . . . yet extending His love, patience, and mercy (40 years), in spite of the

grief we caused Him to experience, vv. 8-11.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Sing praises to the Lord daily.

            2.  Shout joyfully, witnessing to God's salvation.

            3.  Thank the Lord for His countless blessings.

            4.  Kneel and bow down before Him in repentance and faith, confessing my sins and

                 receiving His mercy and grace.

Sing to the lord a new song!

(Psalm 96:1-13)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the new song believers should sing

            1.  It is a universal song . . . "all the earth," v. 1.

            2.  It is a song of blessing . . . "bless His name," v. 2.

            3.  It is a song of the gospel . . . "proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to

                 day," v. 2.

            4.  It is a song declaring God's glory "among the nations," and His wonders

(miraculous works) "among all peoples," v. 3.

II.  Meditation:  on why believers should sing a new song

            1.  Because God is great and greatly to be praised, vv. 4-5.

            2.  Because of God's praise-worthy attributes (verse 6):

                        1)  Honor (worth)

                        2)  Majesty (splendor)

                        3)  Strength (power)

                        4)  Beauty (glory)

            3.  Because God is coming to earth to establish His reign, vv. 9-10.

            4.  Because God will judge the world with righteousness and truth, vv. 10, 13.

III.  Revelation:  on who (and what) shall sing praises to God

            1.  Peoples and nations, v. 3.

            2.  Heavens and earth (angelic and human beings), v. 11.

            3.  The sea and its inhabitants (fish, etc.) v. 11.

            4.  The fields and trees and all their inhabitants (animals and birds), v. 12.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Sing praises continually unto the Lord.

            2.  Bring an offering to present to Him in worship, v. 8.

            3.  Come before Him with fear, awe, reverence, and "trembling," v. 9.

            4.  Testify to unbelievers that "The Lord reigns!" (v.10), and that He is coming again

to judge the world in righteousness and truth through Christ Jesus.
