[GEAR] digital recording?

I play bass in my church band, and we record the practice sessions. We have
2 microphones setup in the room which are plugged into a tape deck for
recording. It's a real simple set up and that's all that we need. We don't
need professional sound. These tapes are just for practicing along to. The
next day I copy over the final version of the songs for practicing along to
for Sunday, and give the tapes to others to practice along to.
But I'm considering switching to digital recording. I have a laptop that
has a soundcard with a mic input.
I'm hoping I could use this for recording the band practices. I spoke with
someone at Sam Ash and he suggested Cakewalk's Home Studio. Which cost
about $80. I don't want to spend more than $100. So that may be a
possibility.
So my needs are recording, simple editing, simple sound. I don't need more
than 2 tracks.
Could those of you who have experience with this, please give me advice?
