[GEAR] Mixing pickups with different tones

I've been "window shopping" for replacement soapbar pickups for my Yamaha, and one of the guys I talked to suggested that to get a range of sounds, use one of the darker pickups and one of the bright ones (I think he said bright on the neck and dark on the bridge).  I'd never heard this before and wanted to see what anybody thought of this.
