[GEAR] Strange string experience

Posted by: bruno_luse <bruno_luse@...>

Dear All,

A couple of days ago I decided to put some roundwounds on my Fender Aerodyne
jazz and use it for rock/metal that sort of thing. I went out intending to
buy some DR hi-beams, but in the end decided to get a 6-string set and try
them out on my fretted six, just for fun. I figured if that didn't work out
I could put the middle four strings on my Fender - much cheaper than buying
a 4-string set and a 6-string set on top of that.

When putting them on my 6-string, I found that the A and D strings wouldn't
fit in the nut, which had been cut to fit the existing set of
Thomastik-Infeld Jazz flats. I was changing the strings at work and my
needle files were at home, so in the end I had DR B, E, G and C strings and
Thomastik A and D strings on the same bass! I thought why not try and play
it that way to compare the two - I expected a great deal of difference
between them, after all the TIs are flats and the DRs are reknown for their
brightness.

When I started to play I had a HUGE surprise - apart from a brighter top end
on the DRs, the basic tone of the strings was incredibly similar! Both had
good sustain and a well-articulated midrange, and were true to the dark and
woody character of the bass itself. The only major difference was in their
popping tone - the DRs had a brilliant PANK sort of sound whereas the TIs
were darker with fewer harmonics. The DRs also sounded somewhat thicker and
more 'raw' whereas the TIs were mellower with a purer sound. But the basic
tone was the same.

In the end I took the DRs off and put the Thomastiks back on - I like their
refined and well-tempered sound and they are *far* nicer to play! I must say
I am more and more impressed with these strings the more I play them.

God bless,

Bruno
