Numbers 10:1-10

THE SOUND OF TRUMPETS

Israel was to make and use two silver trumpets. These trumpets had five different purposes.

A CALL TO ASSEMBLY - Vss. 3,7

When the people were to gather, both trumpets would sound.

A CALL TO AUTHORITIES - Vs. 4

One trumpet was sounded for the leadership to assemble.

A CALL TO ADVANCE - Vss. 5-6

When the people were to break camp and move out the trumpets would sound.

A CALL FOR ASSISTANCE - Vs. 9

When there was an enemy attack in the land of Israel, the alarm would sound. This sounding of alarm indicated Israel's need of God's help.

A CALL TO ADORATION - Vs. 10

This sounding of trumpets was for the marking of the calendar, the celebration of holy days, and the offering of sacrifices.

I think of pastors as God's trumpets today.

Pastors call their congregations to assemble.

Pastors call the leaders together.

Pastors call the congregations to advance.

Pastors call to God publicly and privately for assistance.

Pastors call the people to adoration.

Judges 7:1-7

VICTORY!

Gideon had been called by God to lead Israel against their enemy, the Midianites (Chapter 6). In this chapter we see the victory come to Gideon through unusual means. God indeed had to receive the glory for this remarkable triumph.

THE ARMY WAS REDUCED - Vss. 1-7

God did want Israel to be swelled with pride. Therefore, God told Gideon to send those who were afraid home. The army was reduced by 22,000 men. Vss. 1-3

The army was still too large, so God reduced the army down to 300 men. Vss. 4-7

THE LEADER WAS REINFORCED - Vss. 8-15

Gideon was sent by God to spy on the Midianites.

He heard men talking. A dream was given and the interpretation, indicating that Gideon would be victorious.

THE ENEMY WAS ROUTED - Vss. 16-25

Following God's directions and working in God's strength, Gideon was victorious.

Psalm 84

GOD'S PRESENCE (OR HOUSE)

Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Because God indwells us, we should think of His presence as:

A PLACE OF PRIORITY - Vss. 1-2, 10

I should dwell on the fact that God indwells me, and should enjoy His presence.

A PLACE OF PROTECTION - Vs. 3

If the sparrows and swallows are safe in God's presence, how much more are we! Psalm 27:4-6

A PLACE OF PRAISE - Vss. 4,12

God is to be worshipped by me. Psalm 104:33-34

A PLACE OF POWER - Vss. 5-7, 10

God's power is available in and through us. Acts 1:8, Ephesians 1:19-20

A PLACE OF PRAYER - Vs. 8

Psalm 81:10

Matthew 5:8

INSTRUMENTS OF PEACE

#8 - SERMON ON THE MOUNT

Francis of Assisi prayed:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace!

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy.

Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

It is in dying that we are born to eternal life! Charles R. Swindoll, The Tale of the Tardy Oxcart and 1,501 Other Stories, (Nashville: Word Publishing) 2000, c1998.

Matthew 5:9 says, Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Many Christians go through life not knowing what God's will is for their lives. Some wander aimlessly through their Christian lives simply because they don't know what God's plan is for their lives. Some of you wander aimlessly through your lives because you don't want to know what God's will is for their lives.

Christian, one of the things that is God's will for your life is that you be a peacemaker.

PEACEMAKERS ACCEPT PEACE

God is a righteous, holy God.

God hates sin. Sin is anything that is against the will of God.

When sin is committed a barrier goes up between you and God.

In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve enjoyed fellowship with God in a perfect environment. When they sinned, God evicted them. The barrier went up between man and his God.

We are sinners. We are unrighteous. Isaiah 64:6

Because of sin, there is a lack of peace between God and man.

Someone had to make peace for us, so we could be reconciled to God.

That's exactly what the Lord Jesus did for us.

Jesus, the sinless Son of God, went to the cross and took the punishment for our sin. Isaiah 53:6

The price has been fully paid for our sins.

What we must do is accept God's provision for peace with him by placing our faith in Christ as the one who died for us. When we do, have peace with God. Romans 5:1

When you trust Christ, God declares you righteous.

When you trust Christ, peace between you and God comes.

You go from being God's enemy to being God's child. John 1:9

Christian there is another type of peace we need to accept from God. It is the peace that comes when we deal with our current sins. Sin for Christians breaks their fellowship with God. Isaiah 59:2

Confession of sin restores our fellowship with God. 1 John 1:9

PEACEMAKERS ARE ACTIVISTS FOR PEACE

The peacemaking that we should be active about has nothing to do with world politics. It has to do with relationships between God and man and between man and man.

The term "peacemaker" implies activity. You can't be a peacemaker and be passive.

The area of relationships that most requires that we be activists is our interpersonal relationships with others.

The scripture is very clear that we should resolve conflicts among ourselves. Matthew 5:23-24,

If you come to worship God, and realize that you have done something to offend someone, you are to stop your worship of God and immediately go to that person and make it right.

Romans 12:18 - In other words, if there is any stress in a relationship, make sure it's the other person's fault and not yours!

Hebrews 12:14-15 - A bitter person not only makes himself miserable, but those around him or her as well.

Ephesians 4:32 - How does God forgive you? If you are a Christian, God forgives you totally. How are you to forgive? If you are a Christian, God expects you to forgive totally.

PEACEMAKERS ARRANGE PEACE

When there are differences between people, there is often a need for a peacemaker, a person who can come between two people and bring them together.

Paul was looking for such a person in Philippians 4:2-3.

Euodias and Syntyche needed help. They were quarreling, and it was having a negative effect on the church. Others in the congregation were to step and help them resolve their quarrel.

How can you help Christians who are feuding with each other?

How can you arrange peace with God's help?

  • Pray! Ask God for guidance.
  • Listen! You need to hear both sides, and see if each person understands the other person's position correctly.
  • Explain! You might be able to correct some misconceptions that a person may have.
  • Bring together! Get the people to talk to each other, with or without you present.

PEACEMAKERS ARE AMBASSADORS FOR PEACE

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 - Our Lord Jesus was our peacemaker who paid for our sins and reconciled us to God. Those of us who have received this wonderful gift of reconciliation are called upon to be ambassadors for Christ.

An ambassador is an official representative.

And we have the privilege of being God's official representatives to those who need to be reconciled to God. Someone has brought us to God through Christ, now it is our job to bring others to Christ. 1 Peter 3:15

There is another sense in which we are ambassadors for Christ.

We are ambassadors to other Christians.

We are to help each other grow in Christ. Hebrews 10:24-25

We are also to help those who have spiritual problems. Galatians 6:1

He arose early and got his directions from God the Father.

JESUS WAS PURSUED - Vss. 36-37

********************************************************

1 Corinthians 11:23-32 NOT FOR GRANTED (A SERMON FOR CELEBRATION OF THE LORD'S TABLE)We take many things for granted. We flip a switch, and we turn on a faucet and we take for granted that someone is providing us with electricity and running water.

We go to McDonald's or some other fast food restaurant and take for granted that someone has stocked food and arranged for, and trained people to cook and serve it properly.

We come to church and take for granted that the door is open, the church is clean, the bulletin is typed, the lawn is mowed and that someone is there to play the organ and/or piano.

We probably take parts of the service for granted as well. We would miss the hymns if we didn't sing them, but do we ever concentrate on worship as we sing? We would miss the Scriptures if they weren't read, but do we try to get anything out of the Word while it is being read? We would be upset if we didn't hear a Bible-based message, but is the preaching of the Word viewed by us as something that will help change our lives, or mere entertainment? How much of the worship service are we taking for granted?

Today we come to a routine time in our worship. It is the time that we regularly come to the communion table. We call the celebration "Holy Communion" or "The Lord's Table". Do we take this part of our service for granted, not paying much attention to our responsibilities at the Lord's Table? Or do we allow this time to really minister to our lives.

It is my prayer that the verse by verse study of this passage will help us get more out of our participation at the Lord's Table, and that we will not take the Lord's Table for granted. As we 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 we come to the following conclusions.

1. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD'S TABLE IS A SACRED EVENT. Vs. 23

It was received "of the Lord".

2. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD'S TABLE MEANS REMEMBERING THE LORD'S DEATH AND PROCLAIMING FAITH IN IT FOR SALVATION. Vss. 24-26

3. THE BREAD AND THE CUP REMIND US OF THE BROKEN BODY AND SHED BLOOD OF CHRIST. Vss. 24-25

4. EACH BELIEVER IS TO EXAMINE HIMSELF BEFORE PARTAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP. Vs. 27-28

5. THE LORD WILL CHASTEN US IF WE PARTAKE OF THE LORD'S TABLE IN AN UNWORTHY MANNER. Vss. 29-32

There is a difference between being unworthy (We all are!) and partaking in an unworthy manner. An unworthy manner means I am partaking without confessing sin, or taking the Lord's Table lightly.

Revelation 3:1-6

WHEN GOD'S WORD HITS HOME

There will be times when the preaching of God's Word will bring conviction. The message that Jesus gave to the church of Laodecia gives us some ideas of what to do when we are convicted.

BE APPALLED - Vs. 1

The people at Laodecia should have been shocked, sorrowful and concerned that they were a dead church.

We should be shocked, sorrowful and concerned when God's Word exposes our sins.

BE ACTIVE - Vss. 2-3

We need to actively repent of sin.

BE ASSURED - Vss. 4-5

The Lord Jesus promises blessings for those who overcome.

BE ATTENTIVE - Vs. 6

When God's Word is being presented, we need to hear and respond accordingly.
