Joshua 1:8

BOOKWORM!

In America, the expression, "bookworm" refers to someone who is always reading or studying. "His nose" we might say, "is always in a book." According to Joshua 1:8, when it comes to the Bible, Christians should all be "bookworms."

MY PORTION - "This book of the law..."

Joshua only had the first five books of the Bible. We have the completed Word of God. The portion on which I build my life is to be "this book". Jeremiah 15:16, 2 Timothy 2:15

MY PERMANENCE - "...shall not depart out of thy mouth..."

I am to refer to, and talk about the Word of God as I speak.

In order to do this, I must memorize God's Word. Psalm 119:11, John 15:7

MY PROCESS - "...but thou shalt meditate therein day and night..."

Again, to meditate, we must memorize! Meditation involves reflection upon the meaning of God's Word, and application to my own life.

Psalm 1:2, Psalm 119:97

MY PURPOSE - "...that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein..."

I hide God's Word in my heart and meditate on it, so I will learn to obey the Book!

MY PROMISE - "...for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." See Psalm 1:3

1 Samuel 3

LEARNING FROM SAMUEL

BE AVAILABLE - Vss. 1-10

Samuel thought that he heard Eli calling.

When Eli perceived that Samuel was being called by the Lord he gave some great advice.

Eli Samuel to say "Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth."

We must be available to hear from God through prayer, Bible reading, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

BE ATTENTIVE - Vss. 11-14

God gave Samuel specific information. Samuel had to pay attention so that he would get the message straight. As we pay attention as we read God's word, pray, and hear God's Word preached and taught, we will have our own message from God straight.

BE AN ANNOUNCER - Vss. 15-18

Samuel was encouraged by Eli to tell all him all that God had said.

We should be willing to announce what God has taught us.

BE ACCURATE - Vss. 19-21

Samuel's information was always reliable because he shared exactly what God had told him. May the words we share from God be equally as accurate.

A GOOD MAN IS DISCRETE - Vs. 5b

A GOOD MAN IS REMEMBERED - Vs. 6

A GOOD MAN IS CONFIDENT - Vss. 7-8

A GOOD MAN IS VICTORIOUS - Vss. 9-10

The woman approached Jesus by reaching out and touching his garment. Vss. 25-28

Both expressed their faith.

The woman was assured that her faith had made her whole. Vs. 34

John 13:34-35

THE BADGE

Last year I had the pleasure of going to a pastors' conference at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. While at this conference, which featured many great speakers, we were required to wear a badge. This badge indicated that we were a part of the conference and entitled to meals and other privileges at the conference. The badge gave us authority to participate.

In the old west, or at least in the old west portrayed on the television screen and in the movies, many lawmen such as Matt Dillon and Wyatt Erp wore badges to symbolize who they were. Even the Lone Ranger was known for his badge, a mask.

Today, policemen still wear or carry badges. They serve as identification.

Right now we want to talk about your badge. You have a badge that you are supposed to wear if you are a born again Christian. Your badge serves as identification. It tells the world that you are a Christian. I am talking about the badge of love.

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also

love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to

another."

THE BADGE EXTENDED (Issued to the disciples.) - "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;"

THE BADGE EXEMPLIFIED - "as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."

THE BADGE EVALUATED - "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

The "badge" of Christianity is only genuine when Christians love each other. The world is evaluating our badges to see if they are real or phony.

1 Timothy 3:8-13

THE DEACON

If the work of God is going to get done there must be willing workers. Each and every Christian has that responsibility. Titus 3:8, 1 Peter 4:10, Galatians 5:13

God has given a special group of servants to the church.

These special servants are known as "deacons".

In the early church these men were "servants" who assisted the elders or overseers (bishops) of the church. These were men who knew how to serve and how to serve well.

In the 20th century we need men who follow in the footsteps of the original deacons.

THE WORK OF THE DEACON - Acts 6:1-7

Vs. 1 - The deacons were appointed when the work became too large

Vs. 2 - The deacons were appointed when the word of God could have been neglected.

Vs. 3 - The deacons were appointed when Godly men were available.

Vs. 4 - The deacons were appointed when leaders had their priorities straight.

Vss. 5-7 - The deacons were appointed and the church grew.

THE WAY OF THE DEACON - Vss. 8-12

The deacon is to be:

  1. A man of good behavior - Vs. 8, 10b
  2. A man of pure conscience - Vs. 9
  3. A man who has been proved - Vs. 10a
  4. A man who has a Godly wife - Vs. 11
  5. A man who has his household in order - Vs. 12

THE WAGES OF THE DEACON - Vs. 13

The one who is a good deacon earns a good degree or "rank".

He is promoted in the eyes of God and Man and might go on to bigger and better things for God (Consider Stephen in Acts 6-7).

But even if he does not, his testimony for and his ultimate reward from the Master will be worth it.

Revelation 20:1-10

SATAN'S LAST HURRAH

Satan will lose the Battle of Armageddon to the Lord Jesus.

He will be imprisoned and then released for one last rebellion.

SATAN RESTRICTED - Vss. 1-3 - TO THE BOTTOMLESS PIT

SAINTS RESURRECTED - Vss. 4-6 - TO REIGN WITH CHRIST

SATAN RELEASED - Vss. 7-9a - TO INDUCE REBELLION

Those entering the Millennium will have children who will not all become believers. It is these unbelievers who will follow Satan.

SATAN REMOVED - Vss. 9b-10 - TO THE LAKE OF FIRE
