THE FORGOTTEN FACE OF A CHALLENGED WOMAN

Forgotten Faces - #1 of 10

(The title of this series, “Forgotten Faces” comes from a book with the same name by George Clarke Peck. It was published by the Methodist Book Concern with a copyright of 1919. I only borrowed the title, not the material in the book.)

We begin a new series of studies that will examine the live of Bible Characters that we might just have forgotten, but who have much to teach us.  Our first study is on a woman who was married to Abraham, “the father of faith”.  Her name was Sarah. We want to view Sarah as “The Forgotten Face of a Challenged Woman”.

Sarah’s life was challenged in several different ways:

SARAH WAS CHALLENGED BY CHANGE

We first find the story of Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 11.

Abraham, the Son of Terah, lived with his family in Ur of the Chaldees. This was probably in Northern Mesopotamia.

Abraham took Sarah to be his wife.

It wasn’t long after that, that they moved to a place called Haran. In Genesis 12 we see that God called Abraham out of his homeland to sojourn in what is today the Promised Land. Genesis 12:1-4

This meant to Sarah that she would have to change where she lived.  And because Abraham just sojourned in the land, but never owned it, Sarah would have always been moving.

Another change that was made had to do with religion.

Although it does not say directly in the Bible that Abraham had been an idol worshiper, there’s a good chance that he was until he received God’s call.  Sarah, therefore, was also probably involved in idolatry.  When Abraham’s faith changed, the whole family’s faith would have changed.

Like Sarah, you and I will also have to deal with change.

Many of us have had to experience the change caused by a move as Sarah did.

When a person becomes a Christian, or tries to live the Christian life change is also involved. Like with Abraham and Sarah, it is a change of religion. We will not always understand why things that were once right now are wrong, and why things that were once unimportant are now important.

2 Corinthians 5:17

And change is something that God expects from us as Christians until we get to Heaven.  We are to be constantly growing in the things of Christ.  If we do that, change is inevitable. 2 Peter 3:18

How should we handle changes that we have no control over, such as moves, illness, or the death of a loved one?  Proverbs 3:5-6, 1 Peter 5:7, Romans 12:1

SARAH WAS CHALLENGED BY CONSPIRACY

Twice in their married lives Abraham asked Sarah to lie about their relationship.

The first time occurs in Genesis 12. There was a famine in the land and Abraham moved down to Egypt.

Sarah was still a good looker in her early 70’s, so Abraham was afraid if the Egyptians knew that Sarah was his wife, that they would kill him. Genesis 12:11-19

This happened a second time with Abimelech. Genesis 20

In both cases Sarah was protected by God.

You have to wonder about the strength of Abraham’s faith in those particular times.

You also have to wonder how this might have influenced Sarah.  She was placed in a position of potential adultery because of her husband’s lies.

I think there are two lessons to be learned here.

First of all, let’s not expect our husbands or wives to lie for us.

The second lesson we learn is that we should not give in when someone wants us to do what is wrong in order to protect them.

We should stand for what is right even though it will hurt.

When we cover up for another person’s sins, we are become part and parcel of the wrong.

SARAH WAS CHALLENGED BY CONCEPTION

Genesis 11:30 – But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

What strikes me here is that Abraham and Sarah are being confronted by that which seems absolutely impossible. There seemed to be no way that they would have their own children.

However, God intervenes.

What Abraham thought to be impossible, God would resolve. Genesis 15:1-6

We need to realize something that God told Abraham in Genesis 18.

There is nothing that is impossible with God. Luke 1:37

One of our big problems is that we do not trust God to do what is impossible with man. If we would but ask God and believe Him to do the impossible, we would see it happen. Psalm 81:10

Genesis 16:1-2 - Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. [2] And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

Sarah told Abraham to go into her slave girl and have a child by her. That would have solved the problem humanly speaking.  This was perfectly in line with the customs of the day.

The trouble was Sarah was getting ahead of God.

Sarah was trying to help God solve the problem.

We need to be careful of that as well. Sometimes we will try to solve our own problems without waiting on God to solve them.  Like this particular case, we often find ourselves making matters worse instead of better.

Because Sarah didn’t wait for God she actually added another challenge to her life.

SARAH WAS CHALLENGED BY COMPETITION

Genesis 16:3-4 - And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. [4] And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Hagar had no alternative as a slave than to do what she was told.

It was Abraham and Sarah who created the situation through unbelief.

However when Hagar become pregnant she began to despise and look down at her mistress.  After all, Hagar was able to get pregnant and Sarah wasn’t.  That made Sarah inferior.

Genesis 16:5-6 - And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee. [6] But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

Isn’t this interesting?

Sarah got what she wanted, a pregnant slave girl.

Abraham had done what Sarah had asked.

But when there resentment arose on Hagar’s part, it was all Abraham’s fault.

Sarah was permitted to deal harshly with Hagar, and Hagar ran away.

As far as Hagar was concerned, the Angel of the Lord, the Lord Jesus, appeared to her in the dessert and promised her many descendents.  She was required to go back and submit to her mistress.

As far as Sarah was concerned it was her unbelief that caused the resentment on Hagar’s part.  She chose to handle her competition harshly.

There are a couple of lessons here that we can learn.

·        Don’t blame others for what is your own fault.

·        Don’t deal harshly with those who resent you. Romans 12:14,18,21

SHE WAS CHALLENGED BY COMMUNICATION

The communication that challenged Sarah came from God.

Abraham had three visitors, the Lord Himself and two angels.

Abraham showed them traditional hospitality. Genesis 18:6-15

God said that Sarah would have a son.

Sarah in unbelief actually laughed at what she saw as something absolutely ridiculous.

There will be times when you will read the Bible or hear a message from God’s Word and God will challenge you with what appears to be impossible.

Don’t laugh.

Don’t think God of incapable of doing what you think is impossible.

In the end Sarah did have her child.

Psalm 100

WHY WORSHIP?

We come to Sunday School, but have we worshipped?

We come to church, but have we worshipped?

We come to Prayer Meeting, but have we worshipped?

Our minds are easily distracted.

My tongue can easily mouth words of hymns that I give little or no thought to.  So often when we worship, “the light’s on, but nobody’s home”.

Psalm 29:2 - Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

We get little out of church because we put little into it.

We haven’t really learned to give the Lord “the glory due unto His name” because we haven’t truly learned to worship Him in the beauty of holiness.

So what is worship?

In the Old Testament, the primary word translated “worship” means to “bow down”. When we bow down before something or someone, we are submitting ourselves.

In the New Testament, according to Warren Wiersbe, the key Greek word for worship means to kiss toward’. “It conveys the idea of showing reverence or doing obeisance to God, humans, or even Satan. Warren Wiersbe, Real Worship: Playground, Battleground, or Holy Ground? Second edition (Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 2000) p.20

Warren Wiersbe also says, “When we consider all the words used for worship in both the Old and New Testaments, and when we put their meanings together, we find that worship involves both attitudes (awe, reverence, respect) and actions (bowing, praising, serving). It is both a subjective experience and an objective activity.” Wiersbe, p. 20-21

My friend, I suggest to you that everyone worships something or someone.  Everyone bows to and reverences something or someone. We as Christians are to bow to and worship God; but why?

Please turn to Psalm 100, a classic psalm that tells us about worship.  It is here that we will find why we should worship God.

Psalm 100:1 - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

To make a joyful noise is to “shout joyfully”.

There should be joy in our hearts and on our lips when we worship God.

Church should not resemble a morgue!

There should be joy in church!

There should be no lack of reverence for God, but there should also be no lack happiness.

There are times to be solemn, to be sorrowful, to mourn over sin, to be serious in prayer.

But when we worship privately or publicly there should be great joy!

Psalm 100:2 - Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Whatever we do, we should do as an act of worship to our God.

We should see worship as a service to our God, and we should be glad to serve our God.  If we are glad to serve our God, we will be glad to worship our God.

We are also to come before his presence with singing.

Whether we worship privately our publicly, music is to be a great part of the worship of our God.

Psalm 30:4, Psalm 150:3-6, Ephesians 5:18-19

Why should we go through all this “trouble” to worship God?

Psalm 100 gives us reasons for worshipping our God.

WE SHOULD WORSHIP GOD BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS

Psalm 100:3 - Know ye that the Lord he is God:

The word “LORD” here refers to the word Jehovah, the self existent one, the great “I AM”. Revelation 1:8

When I truly “know” something, I have a heart-felt conviction that I know it.  If I know that the Lord is God, I am thoroughly convinced in my heart, and wouldn’t dare worship anyone or anything but Him.

WE SHOULD WORSHIP GOD BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE

it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;

You wouldn’t be here if God hadn’t created you.

Nothing would be here if God hadn’t created it. Psalm 135:6

If we had no other reason to worship God, and there are many other reasons, we are obligated to worship Him, because we are creatures, we are creations, but HE IS CREATOR! Revelation 4:11

WE SHOULD WORSHIP GOD BECAUSE OF WHO WE ARE

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Not everyone can worship God for these reasons.

Everyone one can worship God as creator.

Not everyone can worship God because they are His people and sheep.

When this psalm was written the Children of Israel were the people of God.    Today it is those who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who are the people of God .

God’s people are those people who God will receive into Heaven.  Jesus tells us that God’s people must be born again! John 3:3, 6-7

If you have truly trusted Jesus as your Savior, you have been born again into the Family of God. You are a citizen of Heaven, even though you are not there yet. YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD! John 1:12-13

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd.

Jesus tells us in John 10:27-30, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. [29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. [30] I and my Father are one.

The Lord Jesus is taking personal responsibility for you as one of His sheep, if you know Jesus as your Savior.

Please listen to these familiar words with a new appreciation for what it means to be one of His sheep.

Psalm 23:1-6

If you honestly reflect on the 23rd Psalm, you will have to admit that we have every reason to worship!

WE SHOULD WORSHIP GOD BECAUSE OF WHAT HE IS LIKE

Psalm 100:5 - For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

You have life because the Lord is good.

You have eternal life, if you know Jesus as Savior, because the Lord is good.

Your every day needs are met because the Lord is good.

You have answers to prayer because the Lord is good.

You have the beauty of creation because the Lord is good.

There is truth and righteousness because the Lord is good.

his mercy is everlasting;

This word “mercy” means “love”.

God’s love is eternal.

It began before the foundation of the world.

It will continue throughout all eternity.

His love is best summed up in that old familiar favorite, John 3:16.

truth endureth to all generations.

God’s truth endures, because God’s word endures.

God’s truth endures, because God’s Son endures. John 14:6

We can worship God because of what he is like, and these are just three examples.

There are more reasons to worship God because of what He is like. You will find them as you read His Word.

STEPS TO SAVING FAITH

 (An evangelistic message)

Jesus had won a sinful Samaritan woman to Himself. John 4:7-26

There would be others in her village who also came to Christ as Savior.

The steps they took should be the steps we take to saving faith.

1. HEAR THE REPORTS - Vss. 28-29 - The woman gave her testimony.  We should hear the testimonies of others we know or have met that have found salvation in Christ and have experienced change in their lives. (Use your own illustrations.)

2. HEAR HIS WORD - Vss. 39-41 - Jesus' word convinced many to be saved. By hearing the Word of God, you should place your faith in Christ. (Share appropriate salvation verses.)

3. HEED THE EVIDENCE - Vs. 42 - Based on the Word of God, place faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior.
