SERMON SEEDS G7 FOR 4/21/03

Posted by: jpeters <jpeters@...>

WELCOME TO SERMON SEEDS FOR APRIL 21, 2003

A NOTE FROM JACK PETERS:

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued interest in Sermon Seeds. As you may or may not know, Sermon Seeds is not my full time ministry. I serve as Pastor of Mount Union Bible Church in West Valley (an hour from Pittsburgh and near Kittanning), PA. Sometimes pastoral duties keep me from getting Sermon Seeds out on time, and even influence me to send you "reruns" of previously posted outlines. Such is the case this week. I have been busy with pastoral duties, including many hours of hospital visitation, and am not able to share new outlines this week. So, here are Monday's Seeds a little late, and some which have been shared in the past. Thank you for your understanding.

Genesis 35:1-15

BACK TO BETHEL

Jacob was returning home after being with his Uncle Laban for many years.

When he traveled to Laban's house, God appeared to him at a place Jacob called "Bethel," or "house of God." See Genesis 28:10-22. This is a place where Jacob had made specific promises to God.

RETURN - Vss. 1, 3

God was calling Jacob back to the place of his original commitment.

Sometimes we need to return to our original commitments and to the "first love" that we once had for Christ. (Revelation 2:4-5)

REMOVAL - Vss. 2, 4

Jacob knew that false Gods and the one true God were not compatible. He called on his household to remove all false Gods. There are times when false Gods creep into our lives. We must remove them.

REMEMBRANCE - Vss. 3, 6-7

Jacob returned to Bethel, remembering how God had delivered Him.

We must remember all that God did for us when he saved us. 2 Corinthians 5:17

RENEWAL - Vss. 9-15

A Renewed Name - Vs. 10, Genesis 32:8

A Renewed Commission - Vs. 11

A Renewed Promise - Vs. 12

A Renewed Fellowship - Vss. 13-15

All of these things are renewed for the Christian when he comes back to God.

1 Samuel 14:24-45

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

OR

PUT BRAIN IN GEAR BEFORE PLACING MOUTH IN MOTION

All too often we speak before we think. It is very easy to look back and say, "I shouldn't have said that," or " I should have said this." King Saul didn't think before he spoke and almost lost his son as a result of his own foolishness.

INTRODUCTION - Vss. 1-23

Due to the efforts of Jonathan and his armor bearer and the intervention of God, a great battle began against the Philistines.

A FAULTY (OR FLAKY) ORDER - Vss. 24-26

Saul stated that any soldier that ate during the battle was under the curse. The woods were full of nourishing honey, but the soldiers were afraid to eat.

A FAULTLESS VIOLATION - Vss. 27-32

Jonathan had not heard his father's proclamation, and ate some of the honey. He was refreshed. Jonathan rightly observed the foolishness of his father's command. When the day was over and the men could eat, they were so famished that they did not properly drain the blood from the animals. Leviticus 17:10-14

A FOOLISH CONDEMNATION - Vss. 33-44

It was discovered that someone had violated the curse placed on eating by Saul.

Jonathan was discovered as the guilty party.

Saul was ready to condemn him to death.

A FAITHFUL RESCUE - Vs. 45

Jonathan was largely responsible for the day's victory.

The people wisely intervened and stopped Saul from killing his son.

Proverbs 27:5-6,9,10,17

THAT'S FRIENDSHIP!

THE COUNCIL OF A FRIEND - Vss. 5-6, 9

A true friend gives good council, even when that council is in the form of a rebuke (wound).

THE CONSISTENCY OF A FRIEND - Vs. 10A

A true friend consistently maintains his own friendships and the friendships of his parents. See Proverbs 17:17.

THE COMFORT OF A FRIEND - Vs. 10B

A close friend is a greater comfort during a time of sorrow than a relative who has been distant. Romans 12:10,15; Galatians 6:2

THE COMPETENCE OF A FRIEND - Vs. 17

A good friend "sharpens the countenance". A good friend makes me a better person.

Jonathan's friendship with David made David a better man. 2 Samuel 1:25-26

Luke 6:17-26

NOW OR LATER?

In the past, you've seen him on television. You remember the garage

mechanic who told of his customer who did not change his oil regularly, and

did not put in Fram Oil Filters? The end result was an expensive motor job.

The commercial ended with the famous words, "You can pay me now, or you can

pay me later."

Many people do not receive regular medical checkups. When they do end up

going to the dentist, the end up receiving more expensive procedures because

the problem was not found early. The dentist could say the same thing, "You

can pay me now, or you can pay me later."

In Luke 6:17-26, our Lord Jesus uses the same principle of "now or later".

He tells us that we are blessed, or happy, if we experience certain things

now, because if we don't do them now, we'll do them later. Jesus tells us:

YOU CAN BE POOR NOW OR LATER - Vss. 20, 24

According to James 2:5 the poor have an advantage over the rich. It's easier

for them to have faith.

In Mark 10:23-37, Jesus mentions the difficulty a rich man has getting into

heaven.

Matthew 5:3 tells us that Jesus wants us to be "poor in spirit". The poor in

spirit admit their own inability to save themselves, and trust Christ as

Savior. Ephesians 2:8-9 After being saved the poor in spirit will rely on

Christ for the ability to live the Christian Life (Galatians 5:16,

22-23,Ephesians 5:18).

In Vs. 24, our Lord pronounces a "woe" on the proud, self-sufficient rich.

They refuse to be poor (in spirit) now, so they will be poor later for all

eternity. See Luke 12:15-21 and Luke 16:19-25

YOU CAN BE HUNGRY NOW OR LATER - Vss. 21a, 25b

Vs. 21a is explained by Matthew 5:6. We are to hunger and thirst after

righteousness now (Psalm 27:8, Psalm 63:1-2).

First we must hunger and thirst after God for salvation.

Second we must hunger and thirst after God and His Word (1 Peter 2:1-3) for

fellowship and learning. We should pattern our lives after the Bereans (Acts

17:10-12), Jeremiah (Jeremiah 15:16), and the Lord Himself (Hebrews 10:7).

If we hunger now, we will be filled!

If we are not hungry now, Vs. 25a tells us that we will be hungry later!

Of you are not hungry for salvation now, you will be hungry for relief in

hell!

If you are not hungry as a Christian now, you will be hungry for rewards

later.

YOU CAN WEEP NOW OR LATER Vss. 21b and 25b.

The parallel to this verse is Matthew 5:4. The ones that mourn now shall

laugh and be comforted later.

If you sincerely mourn over sin now you will probably come to Christ as you

Savior.

As a Christian, if you sincerely mourn over the sins you commit, you will

have the joy of forgiveness (2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 John 1:9).

If you do not mourn over sin, you will mourn later.

The one who is not a Christian will mourn in hell.

The one who is a Christian will mourn at the Judgment Seat of Christ (2

Corinthians 5:10-11).

YOU CAN BE REWARDED NOW OR LATER Vss. 22, 23, 26

True Christians will suffer for Christ sometime in their lives (John

15:18-21).

But God promises them great reward later.

The false prophet has received all the reward he'll ever get in this life.

If we are constantly well spoken of, without any criticism or persecution

for Christ's sake, we should be concerned. See Vs. 26.

Acts 6

STEPHEN

Stephen was a very special man.

HIS CHARACTER - Vss.3, 5

Stephen met the qualifications for being a deacon.

He had an honest report.

He was full of the Holy Ghost.

He was full of wisdom.

He was full of faith.

HIS CONDUCT - Vs. 8

HIS CONFLICT - Vss. 9-14

HIS COUNTENANCE - Vs. 15

Despite his struggle he had the face of an angel.

Philippians 1:12-18

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKING

We have an expression in America which says, "Opportunity Knocks".

When opportunity knocks, we find that there are great chances to accomplish something. When a person has the chance to make some extra money through work, that is "opportunity knocking". When a Christian has a very good opening to share the Gospel, that is opportunity knocking. Although Paul was a prisoner in Rome, he saw
opportunity knocking.

OUTREACH Vss. 12-13

(You might want to review the things which happened to Paul, including his arrest, imprisonment, appeal to Caesar, trip to Rome etc.

See Acts 22-28) Paul was under Roman guard 24 hours a day, under the supervision of Caesar's crack troops, the Praetorian Guard. He took this opportunity to spread the Gospel.

OVERFLOW Vss. 14-17

Paul's preaching influenced others to preach the Gospel.

Some did it out of sincerity, others were hoping that Gospel preaching would make things harder on Paul.

OPTIMISM Vs. 18

Paul could have gotten very upset by the wrong motives of people, but he didn't. He simply rejoiced that the Gospel was preached.

In light of Revelation 20:15, we should have the same joy when the Gospel is proclaimed.

Revelation 3:7-13

LOVE LETTER

In Revelation 2 & 3 our Lord Jesus Christ gives messages to 7 churches in Asia. Each message is to a certain type of church. The church in Philadelphia was a church that was being faithful to her Lord. This is a love letter from the Lord Jesus to this church.

ATTRIBUTES OF THE LORD - Vs. 7

ACTIONS FOR THE LORD - Vs. 8

ASSURANCE FROM THE LORD - Vss. 9,10,12

ADVICE BY THE LORD - Vss. 11, 13
