Subject: 07-97 MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial
This is the July issue of the MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial. Over the
last two years we have covered many topics relating to becoming more
productive with your Mac. Also, literally hundreds of tips have been
published to assist our members. Some of the other benefits of the
newsletter are:
- Membership in the private MacTalk Mailing List
- Membership in the MacAssistant Online User Group
- Great offers and discounts on hardware and software
- Monthly OneClick Tutorial written by WestCode Software
- Monthly HTML Tip of the Month
- Special pricing for User Group Newsletter Editors
- Members favorite web sites
Past tutorials have included Clarisworks, Launcher, Arranging your Hard
Disk, Formatting of Hard Disks, Fonts, Apple Menu Options, The Black Art
of SCSI and many more.
Future tutorials will include Mac OS8, Setting up a network at home,
Using PlainTalk, Hard Disk Partitioning, Using the Scrapbook, Claris
Emailer, and others at members requests.
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and intermediate
users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac. The tutorials
are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is
a shareware product that has even more information for those that
register. This month's tutorial article is available to subscribers only.
This newsletter is distributed as a DocMaker application. No other
software is needed.

Subject: Acme Filters_236
Acme Filters 2.3.6 (C)1997 by Eric V. Curtis All rights reserved
Acme Filters takes the place of many separate freeware/shareware
utilities you may be currently using. It started out as a simple
file converter to translate some old Smith-Corona word processor
files into text files I could use on my Macintosh. Then I realized
my code would make a good shell for any type of drag-and-drop filter.
So, I combined several filters I occasionally use into one "all-purpose"
drag-and-drop application. Full source code is also included so you
can add your own filters or modify the included filters.

Subject: Talking Dictionary Patches
These are some hacks for the American Heritage Talking Dictionary 4.0
program, PPC & 68K versions. (There are a few patches that will only work
on 68K versions and are so marked.)
Included are patches for PPC and 68K versions that will remove the
irritating "No Multimedia" warning dialog put up by the program at startup
whenever the original CD is not mounted. The few others will change some
font and size preferences in various windows.
This is freeware, and is not endorsed by Softkey or The Learning Company,
although I heard they were giving out the 68K dialog patch to people who
complained about the problem.

Released: 5. March, 1999
Redistribution may occur without permission from the Author.
Akua Sweets is a set of scripting additions and includes over 150 example
scripts showing their use. Some examples of these scripts include mounting
network volumes, converting to Unix text, controlling remote machines,
displaying images & animations, working with HTML files & tags and more...
V1.31 has mostly bug fixes to the V1.3 release and a few new commands.
V1.3 and beyond have a re-coded dictionary - there will be problems with
scripts made with versions < 1.26. There is an included applet called
Update Scripts to Sweets V1.31 which should convert older compiled scripts
(more or less) to the new dictionary.
Akua Sweets includes the following Scripting Additions:
(Info-Mac will trim this list.)

Subject: Anarcho 1.6
Anarcho is a text editor, nothing more. It is smart enough to do most of the
jobs that all the word processor posers out there are doing. Anarcho uses
150K of RAM and 35K of disk space. In these days of huge expensive
applications, and limited hardware, it is nice to have something free that
will fit in a small space. Anarcho will format text files from lesser
computers including PC text files and QWK mail bundles. In version 1.6 all of
the features have been implemented. This may be the final version. The 68040
compatibility problems and graceless exiting have been eliminated. Enjoy!

Subject: Change Charset, a BBEdit external
Hello!
This is my first posting of Macintosh software. I hope everything that is
required is here...
Change Charset is an BBEdit external which allows one to convert characters
from/to the Macintosh charset to/from ISO-Latin-1 and to/from 7-bit
Scandinavian (which is still largely used in Scandinavian unix machines!).
This probably makes Change Charset interesting for Europeans only. Still,
it never hurts to remind the English-speaking ASCII-world that there are
languages which DO need more than 7-bit characters ;-)
The conversion can be done in place, to a new window or the converted text
can be copied to the clipboard. If there's a selection, Change Charset
will act on the selection, otherwise it will process the whole window.
This program can be freely copied for non-commercial purposes.

Subject: ChaosPoetry Generator 1.2.sit
ChaosPoetry Generator is a HyperCard based writing tool to help writers
break through writers block. Full documentation is included within the
stack, but a simple explanation is that ChaosPoetry Generator is a random
string generator wherein you control the strings.
This version corrects a major bug which would not allow you to save your
generated text. This has been fixed, and now CPG allows full text export.
We give our permission for this file to be included
on the Info-Mac CD-ROM, with our usual stipulations.
Thank you.

Subject: Cobwebber 3.0
Cobwebber 3.0 is a program in the form of a Hypercard stack for
building web sites. It edits the HTML directly, with a system for adding
tags quickly. You can easily add your own tags, even dynamic ones, which
can have fill-in text, options, colors, local file links, and other such
things. For instance, there's a tag which asks for the number of rows and
columns you want in your table, and then makes the table. This tag is open
for editing and copying for your own tags. Full online help is provided.
Cobwebber will never be quite out of date, because you can always add new
tags for new features. I also hope that people will take advantage of the
ability to export and import tags. You could download small files enabling
style sheets, XML, new HTML stuff, and anything else that may crop up.
Cobwebber allows use of the standard color picker for picking colors, and
has a file name and link checker. If you make web stuff, get Cobwebber, for
no more than $20!
Users of 1.2 will be glad to hear that Cobwebber 3.0 is a great
improvement in many ways. This version is also thoroughly beta-tested.

Subject: Computer Cuisine Deluxe v1.1
Inaka Software Announces Computer Cuisine Deluxe-- the complete
stand-alone recipe database solution for both Windows and Macintosh users.
OAKLAND, Calif., April 9, 1999 -- Inaka Software today announced that it
has released a completely new recipe database solution called Computer
Cuisine Deluxe. Computer Cuisine Deluxe is by far the most efficient and
simple way to manage your home recipe database. It's features include a
well designed layout that makes adding, viewing, sorting, finding and
printing a snap. In addition to the simple, yet highly graphical layout,
Computer Cuisine Deluxe allows you to add an infinite number of your own
recipes to the existing database. Computer Cuisine Deluxe no longer
requires any other application to run. Simply launch Computer Cuisine
Deluxe, and enjoy.
Computer Cuisine Deluxe:
* Completely stand-alone, no longer requires any other application to run!
* Version 1.1 now includes enhanced dictionary files for spell checking,
as well as utlities for enhanced data recipe importing for other
applications!
* Over 1,000 recipes already entered for your convenience!
* Added commands which take advantage of email & web features!
* Enhanced graphical layout with simple to use menus and icons!
* Expanded conversion menu for easy calculations to and from U.S.
Standard and Metric!
* List your recipes by item, category, type, or servings! You can choose!
* A print menu which gives users the option of printing in color or b&w,
and in a small or large format! (The small format folds to fit perfectly
onto a 3x5" recipe card).
* Expanded sorting functions! The ability to sort huge recipe lists with
one simple click!
* Fully compatible for both Macintosh and Windows users!
MENUS:
Buttons are located at the top of the layout for added convenience. For
example, just one of the buttons can sort all of your recipes with the
click of your mouse! In the main menu, Computer Cuisine Deluxe will
alphabetically sort all of your recipes and give you a listing of your
recipes from A-Z. This works much like the index in any cookbook you own,
however, this index is updated every time you add or remove a recipe!
Yet, that is just one of many functions Computer Cuisine Deluxe has to
offer!
And with the extensive search capabilities already built into the
program, you will now be able to search through all of the entered
recipes with the touch of a button! You don't even have to know the exact
name of the recipe, or ingredient.
PRINTING:
Computer Cuisine Deluxe also makes printing your recipes a snap. The
Print Menu icon placed at the top of the layout, allows you to choose the
size and color of your recipes in one stroke. Computer Cuisine Deluxe has
five printing options to choose from. The standard, or large size recipe
will use the full paper size of (8 1/2 "x 11") for printing, to ensure an
adequate amount of printing space. The small recipe size will print
recipes that once trimmed and folded lengthwise, can fit perfectly on a
(3"x5") index card! Last, is the Deluxe Print option. This will print a
recipe with a similar look and feel much like the on-screen version.
PRICE: Just $15 US. (Shareware)
Computer Cuisine Deluxe rivals any commercial recipe program on the
market. There are versions for both Macintosh and Windows users. The easy
to use menus and well designed layout make it the obvious chose for
anyone who wishes to store their recipes in a database. At only a
fraction of the cost of most recipe programs, Computer Cuisine Deluxe can
do it all.

Subject: CopyPaste 4.3.1
CopyPaste is the shareware utility that was awarded a 5
mouse rating by MacUser and was their shareware utility of
the year 1996. Shareware Junkies declared it Mac Product
of the year for 1997. CopyPaste also appeared in the June 97
Wired and has been featured in MacWeek, TidBits, MacAddict and
many other magazines. CopyPaste magnifies the clipboard in many
different ways and has been declared indespensible by web developers,
editors, writers, dtp professionals and everyone who uses
the clipboard.
CopyPaste is available online and can be downloaded free at:
http://www.scriptsoftware.com
it is also on the major shareware archives and AOL.
One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the Mac's
system software that have changed and progressed over the years, copying
and pasting has not evolved. How many times have you found yourself going
back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a different
application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items at a time,
then go to another application and paste each of these items. Now you can
do not only this but view all 100 clipboards, save useful text and pictures
thru restarts and much much more.
**MacOS 8.5 compatible!
**Many advanced features but easy for beginners!
**Full Drag & Drop compatibility!
**Use up to 100 independent clipboards by menu or simple key commands!
**View and access all the clipboard using the CopyPaste Palette!
**Append text to 1 of 10 files on disk at any time!
**Process text, picture and net data on the Clipboards in many ways!
**Use a command key to switch and/or view all applications!
**Works great with iType, iSearch, iCount and iView Multimedia!
**New pop-up palette function and more!
**Clip Recorder - remembers the last 10 items copied via
command c.
**Clip Archive - copied data is appended to one of 10 text
files on disk.
**Save Clipboards thru Restarts - allows all 100 Clipboards
to be saved thru Shutdown or Restart.
CopyPaste eliminates tedious repetitive work and increases
your ability to get the job done.
Changes
In Version 4.3.1
bug fixes:
In Version 4.3
bug fixes:
- On Japanese systems the inline input method uses the Scrap Manager - very
strange. This caused problems with the Clip Recorder.
Many programs do NOT use the DeskScrap (=the public clipboard) for their
own copy and paste action, so CopyPaste sends these programs to the
background and back to the front in order to get the desired clip. You could
see this in previous versions when the program hides toolbars and other
window elements. This version patches certain routines so that the toolbars
stay on the screen, which accelerates CopyPaste`s performance. You can
switch this option off in the preferences if you have compatibility
problems.
Clip Sets now can be changed via hotkey. You can activate one of the ten
Clip Sets either by selecting it from the menu or by typing F10 + #. This
hotkey only works when the option "Use F2,F3, F4 Keys" is active, otherwise
none of the function keys is intercepted by CopyPaste.
The iconized Palette can now be docked at the bottom of the screen and
pops upwards when the mouse moves over it. Also a short delay for shrinking
and expanding the Palette is introduced.
A new Tag and Drop feature has been added. If Tag and Drop is active, you
can press ctrl, option, command and click the mouse between two characters of
a word. The order of the two characters will be reversed. This is intended
as a fast method to correct common typing errors.
The preferences now allow you to change settings for individual programs.
The previously hardcoded settings are already preset but can be changed.
The main preferences dialog contains the button "Application Exceptions"
which leads to the new dialog window.
The e-mail UnComment now works smarter and removes all levels of comments.
Additionally the text will be reformatted if the option key is pressed when
you select e-mail UnComment.

Subject: DOCMaker v4.8.4
Release of DOCMaker version 4.8.4 - Mac OS 8.5 compatible.
DOCMaker gives you the Macintosh user powerful tools for creating
self-contained and self executing multi-media documents containing
graphics, information, and links to other software and information. By
incorporating QuickTime Video, sound, AppleEvents, "Hot Picture Buttons"
and more, documents that you create can become an exciting multi-media
experience for your readers. No other software is needed by the reader
to open, print, and fully experience your documents. The "viewer engine"
is embedded into the documents to make distribution and use a simple and
easy process. Depending on the optional capabilities you save with your
documents, the actual size of the documents can be very small.

Subject: DOCMaker Document Patcher for 8.5
The DOCMaker Document Patch for Mac OS 8.5 will quickly update existing
DOCMaker documents for use under Mac OS 8.5. After patching, the
documents will still work under older Mac OS versions. The patcher
replaces the horizontal navagation scrollbar in those documents that have
more than one chapter. This scrollbar needs updating for use under Mac
OS 8.5. The symptoms that are fixed by this patch are long pauses in the
Macintosh after using the popup menu in the navagation scrollbar. This
patch is only needed for DOCMaker documents whose version number is 4.8.3
or earlier.

Keywords: keyboard, prompt, source, Newt
Don't Ask (Don't Tell) is a simple, tiny app (autopart) that adds a button (at
lower left) in the standard Newton keyboard so that you can turn off/on the
"Do you want to add..." prompt, which you may find annoying or sometimes
desirable...
When dot is hollow (default), words pass through to the dictionary prompt.
When dot is solid, the dictionary prompt does not appear (it's
blocked/overridden).
This Newt source file (dontask.nwt) and the associated Newt-generated
package (DontAsk.pkg) are shareware ($5)

Subject: Emile Lite 1.0 XML Editor
Emile Lite by Media Design in*Progress is a free XML editor for Macintosh.
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is an open document standard for
structured content, created and developed by the World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C).
Emile Lite facilitates productive markup with XML, liberating the author
from detailed knowledge of the XML specification by providing dialogs for
custom tags and common markup constructs. The application integrates a
clone of the comprehensive Emacs text editor, with a graphical user
interface for Macintosh ease of use. Emile Lite automatically adapts the
user interface to the current XML document type, building a customized
authoring environment that is tailored to specific needs using XML.
Emil Lite supports editing with Extensible HTML, the next generation of
HTML that is based on XML. The application can export an XML document as
HTML, so web authors can take advantage of extensible markup while keeping
the pages accessible also for older web browsers.
System Requirements: MacOS 7.1 or later, works both for 68K and PPC.

Well I've taken the 1mb MS file and made it into a slightly more useable
form. Using the documentation supplied by the author of Eudora, I included
all (and enhanced many) of the 150+ graphics; reformatted the text
including helpful color coding; and have organized the informative but
long-winded Word document into separate Chapters.
Hopefully this DOCMaker version of the Eudora manual will help you

Subject: WordPerfect Extended Counting Macro
The WordPerfect for Macintosh macro, "Extended Counting" saved in the
attached document demonstrates an algorithm which allows you to count beyond
WordPerfect's variable limit of 32,767.
My purpose in writing this was to allow a prompt displaying a counter
variable to continue working after 32,767 iterations.
The Extended Counting macro updates a prompt each time the counter is
incremented by 1. Displaying the updated prompt takes much longer than
incrementing the variables needed to display the prompt. Therefore, if you
choose to update the prompt every 100 increments, you will notice a marked
increase in speed. In the macro code, I have commented out "If" statements
to update the prompt every 10, 100, or 1,000 passes.

Also, Quoter, and other macros, has been improved.

FormDrop WWW v1.0.2 (This update should replace FormDrop WWW v1.0)
FormDrop WWW v1.0.2 Fixes a bug which caused FormDrop to not
implement drag-and-drop on some macs.
On The World Wide Web, forms can be used to send information when
one is at a web site. If you have a web page which uses forms, when people
visit your site and use the forms, the data is sent to you as an e-mail
attachment. This file, if opened in a text editor will look like one long
line of garbled letters, numbers, and words.
FormDrop WWW is a simple drag-and-drop utility to translate the
output files of forms from the Web into readable text documents that can be
opened with SimpleText.
To Use:
Drag and drop any World Wide Web form output text file onto
FormDrop WWW. The program will create a decoded file with "(Decoded)"
appended to its name. You may also drop multiple form files onto FormDrop
WWW and it will decode all of them.

Installation:
To enable "GREPFileRename" to do its magic, you have to have AppleScript
[1.1 or higher], the standard Apple Scripting Additions and a scriptable
Finder (i.e. "Finder 7.1.2" to 8.1 plus the "Finder Scripting Extension"
when running system 7) installed and the following third party Scripting
Additions must reside in your Scripting Additions Folder:
- "Jon's Commands" by Jon Pugh [1.8.1 or higher],

far as practicable, the structure and appearance of your text on a Web
page.
Hyperize2 creates pages, frames, or fragments of HTML code from files that are
dropped on it or opened interactively, or from text on the Clipboard. It
arranges for HTML formatting commands that reproduce your document's structure
in terms of paragraphs, lines, indents and, to some extent, columns. It also
translates characters which are special either to HTML or to the Macintosh into
HTML-acceptable equivalents.
If you've used Hyperize 1.1 before, you'll notice the following new features:
Hyperize2 runs native on a PowerPC.
Hyperize2 can now create whole pages, frames, or fragments of
HTML-encoded text.
Hyperize2 can now read from and/or write to the Clipboard.
Hyperize2 is much smarter than its predecessor about indentation, and
somewhat smarter about columnar layouts.
Hyperize2 has two new formatting options. They concern whether leading
white space on a line is intended to introduce new paragraphs or new
column-aligned list items, and the distance between column stops.
Hyperize2 stores its default preferences in a preferences file, and
allows the user to create secondary settings files for particular types
of task, such as hyperizing justified text fragments or whole program
listings. These files can be opened from within the application or
double-clicked to launch the application with their settings.
Hyperize2 lets you browse for documents and applications when setting
the File Creator for its output files. It also allows you to choose an
output file name and location that's different from the default.
Hyperize2 works on any type of Macintosh with System 7 or later. It can run in
about 128Kb of memory, in which any number of files of any size can be
processed. Operations involving the Clipboard require more, according to
the size of its contents.
The (fat binary) application itself is about 64k.
Freeware. Feedback is appreciated.

Subject: WordPerfect Indexing Macros
Hi!
I have written a set of Indexing macros for WordPerfect for Macintosh, and
would like to submit them for your consideration. They help to automate the
process of marking WordPerfect text for indexing. I've appended a BinHexed

Subject: Nisus Indexing Macros
Nisus Indexing Macros
Nisus Writer is a superb word processor with powerful capabilities,
but...
I have been bothered by the way that Nisus Writer generates indexes. It
lists every single page on which a marked item occurs. This leads to the
creation of indexes with entries such as:
Dogs...1,2,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,30,31,32,100,101,102
I have written a macro to collapse such entries according to the method
prescribed by the 13th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, section
8.67. For example, the entry above would be rendered:
Dogs...1,2,7-15,30-32,100-102
(The full method is actually more complex than this, and I have fully
implemented it).
Along with that macro, I've developed some others to facilitate creating
indexes. Perhaps the most useful ones are for marking proper names for
indexing. If, for example, you have the names "Alfred E. Neuman," "Billy
Bob Smith," and "Wild Bill Hickock," simply select all these names and
run a macro to mark each for the index as follows:
Neuman, Alfred E. Smith, Billy Bob Hickock, Wild Bill

Enclosed you will find the two Read Me files (TEXT and HTML versions) from

heck of a lot of fun, and can be downloaded right now
from the internet?
Answer - - -> iView Multimedia!
A very special iView Multimedia user makes these comments.
I've always preferred bits to atoms. But my Mac started
looking like my photo shoebox - stuff everywhere. I don't
need overkill. I simply need an easy-to-use, powerful,
"shoebox" organizer for my photorealistic renderings,
hi-res textures, and even digital photos of my family
vacation. iView Multimedia is my solution.

JARED'S CHRISTMAS
(Liner Notes)
Reprinted with permission from
"Touching Me, Touching You, Touching Me Again: A JARED discography".
While Central America has seen more than its share of atrocities in recent years;
never before has a lovely Christmas song been brutalized as thoroughly as by the
vocal stylings of JARED, the Head of Security at FREEVERSE SOFTWARE.
Like an angry Immigration officer, Jared's distinctive rendition grabs us, slaps
us around, threatens to cavity search us and ultimately demands our passport be
issued from that same circle of hell from which his voice originates.
Never has the mating of cats sounded so melodic as after one has listened to "El
Carnicero de Canciones," the "Butcher of Songs," as Jared was known in
Guatemala. Yet, this is perhaps the worst part; one is somehow drawn to his song,
playing it over and over again. So listen to, "Felize Navidad", and suffer --
for this is art.

Subject: Johns WP Character Styles 1.1.1
These WordPerfect macros create a menu of up to 26 styles that you can
apply (by mouse or keyboard) to any amount of selected text or, if no text
is selected, the style will apply to what you subsequently type. Supports
all WordPerfect attributes.
Easy to use, promotes accuracy, saves a lot of time and steps. By defining
10 character styles in addition to 10 paragraph (regular) styles, you have
the flexibility and power in formatting that would require 100 paragraph
styles alone. "Incredibly useful." - UMich Mac Archives

Subject: Johns WP Window Manager 2.0.1
This set of five macros for WordPerfect 3.x:
1) goes through all open windows, asking for each if you want to save and
close, just close, or leave open. You can opt to close all windows at
once, save all, or print all.
2) tiles all open windows horizontally, rather than to the pattern of
approximate squares that the program command produces, so you can read
whole lines of text. Tiles windows to standard width.
3) tiles windows horizontally as above, but to the width of the screen.
4) opens a new view of the active window, independently scrollable so you
can view two parts of one document at once.
5) toggles between the top two open windows, saving you the trouble of
cycling through all open windows or selecting the window by name from the
menu.
New in this version: Save All and Print All commands; Tile commands are
button-bar aware; and Close without Saving prompts you to confirm your
choice.
Free for non-commercial distribution and use. May be included on UMich and
Sumex CD's.

Subject: John's WP GREP 1.1.5
Adds regular expression (GREP) search capability to WordPerfect 3.5 and later.
The standard Find command lets you search for occurrences of the word
'apple' in your file. But sometimes, instead of searching for a specific
word or phrase, you'd benefit from searching for a certain _kind_ of word
or phrase. That kind could just be a list of, say, 'apple', 'orange',
'plum', 'pear'. Or it could be any word that starts with 'p' and has four
letters, or any word starting with 'p' and having four letters, the second
and fourth of which are within the first half of the alphabet.
In like manner, you can search for a telephone number from any country or
configuration followed by a word that starts with a vowel. If you can
conceive of the kind of text - the pattern that describes it - you can
search for it.
Free. May be included on AMUG, Info-Mac and Umich CDs.

I announce the coming flood of Mac*Chat issues, ask for help in
widening Mac*Chat's readership, praise what I've seen so far of
the DayStar Mac clones, mention how to find out more about the
first narrow-focus software designed to help people who manage

Subject: Macintosh Graphics FAQ v2
This is a slightly revised version of my graphics FAQ for Mac computers,
questions that I keep seeing because people keep asking. Hopefully if they
look for answers before they ask the same old questions, they'll find my
FAQ and life will be just peachy. This version that I'm uploading is in
DocMaker format, and looks almost as nice as the web page version (which
is):
http://www.redshift.com/~surfvh/X/MacGraphicsFAQ.html
I picked docmaker as the format because you can select and drag the URLs
out of the window and into a browser or download program. That's nicer than
using a smaller format that doesn't allow that, binhexing a SimpleText file
seems silly, and raw text (resource fork stripped) doesn't look as nice...
Plus I just needed some reason to download the new version of docmaker. So
hopefully you'll find out something from this FAQ.
