God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

My conclusion is that the Bible nowhere prohibits the use of birth control. But are there any texts that suggest or imply that birth control is morally permissible? 1. 1 Corinthians 7:5 – “While this passage does not mention contraception, it does carry important implications for the discussion. Here it seems evident that God's will for the Christian couple is not “maximum fertility,” i.e., the maximum number of conceptions biologically possible during the course of a Christian marriage. By mutual agreement, sexual relations may be renounced for a time in order to pursue spiritual objectives – in this case, prayer. The larger principle would be that Christian couples have the right to choose to “override” the usual responsibility to procreate (Gen. 1:28) for a season in order to pursue a spiritual good” (John Jefferson Davis, Evangelical Ethics, P&R, 2004, p. 39). 2. 1 Corinthians 7:26-28 – Here Paul advises Christians to avoid taking on the responsibilities of family life due to the impending persecution. 3. 1 Timothy 5:8 – This text not only demands that we work or in some way provide financially and physically for our family, but also forbids us doing anything that would hinder such care, even if we are employed. We are forbidden to take on obligations, no matter how well intentioned, which would lead us to fail to provide basic necessities for those who are dependent upon us.

First, there is no “gift of singleness” if by gift we mean a supernatural outpouring accompanied by some kind of revelation that it is God’s hidden will that you remain single all your days. I would suggest that there are two proper ways to speak of this gift. First, if you are single, you have the gift of singleness... The “gift” of which Paul speaks is the freedom that comes to us when we are not burdened with pleasing our spouse... Second, I believe we can speak of the gift of singleness if by that we simply mean a lack of a current pressing need to marry. I too have this kind of the gift at present. I am sympathetic to men who are eager to marry, or in certain circumstances, to remarry. But I do not at present share that urgency. Indeed I honestly can’t imagine remarrying. I am savvy enough, however, to know that this could change in a moment. God’s Word gives me liberty. If the desire comes to marry I would be without sin to do so. I would not be turning up my nose at some kind of pseudo-charismatic “gift” God had given me. I’d be giving thanks for the wife He would be giving me.

CATEGORY CUISINE TAG YIELD
Grains East Indian 1 Servings

INGREDIENTS

1 Carnival Squash, halved and seeded (looks like a white acorn squash, white flesh, doesn't get quite as soft when cooking, also comes in a marbled green and white variety, as well. [apparently])
1/2 c Uncooked medium pearled barley
3 sm Summer (yellow) squash, thick sliced and quartered (about 2/3 cup)
3 Ripe plum tomatoes, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
1/2 c Mushrooms, thick sliced and halved
1/2 Vidalia onion, chopped
2 ts Crushed garlic (up to 3)
1/2 ts Fresh ground cumin
1/4 ts Fresh ground basil
3 ts Spike (up to 4)
3 ts East Indian Hot Curry (I used Williams-Sonoma, it has a really nice blend of flavors, to include the addition of cardamom and saffron) (up to 4)

INSTRUCTIONS

Bake squash at 350 degrees, half side down in about 1/2 water for 30 min,
until slightly tender. Bring 3 cups water to boil, add barley, cook 30-40
minutes until tender. In the meantime, chop/slice veggies, set aside. Brown
onion and garlic in pan, with "trace" olive oil until onions are
transparent. Add water as needed, if pan gets too dry. Add chopped yellow
squash, mushrooms, and spices cook until moisture is released from
mushrooms. Add tomatoes and cook for about 2-3 minutes until tomatoes are
heated, but still firm.
Add prepared barley and cook till barley is reheated and coated with spices
and juices.
Before filling squash cavity, dust with curry, prick with fork and rub in.
Fill with barley-vegetable mixture. Bake additional 30-40 minutes until
squash is tender.
Serve with additional filling on the side or this will easily fill two
squashes! (I had planed on freezing the rest, but there were *no*
leftovers.) I made this up as I went along, and used a pretty heavy hand
with the Spike and the curry, as I like my food with *ZIP*. I got rave
reviews from the group that I tried it out on tonight.
