[T]here is nothing in us or done by us at any stage of our earthly development because of which we are acceptable to God. We must always be accepted for Christ’s sake or we cannot ever be accepted at all. This is not true of us only “when we believe,” it is just as true after we have believed. It will continue to be true as long as we live… It is always, on His “blood and righteousness” alone that we can rest. There is never anything that we are or have or do that can take His place or that take a place along with Him. We are always unworthy, and all that we have or do of good is always of pure grace.

Quite simply, it is a fact of history that the church of Christ has not experienced any major nationwide revival under the conditions of advanced modernity. On the other hand, modernity undercuts true dependence on God's sovereign awakening by fostering the notion that we can effect revival by human means. On the other hand, modernity makes many people satisfied with privatized, individualistic, and subjective experiences that are pale counterfeits of true revival.

    • Roasted Garlic and Almond Topping

    INGREDIENTS

    2 tb Oil
    8 Garlic cloves
    8 oz Cheese, cream
    1/4 c Cream, sour
    2/3 tb Sauce, worcestershire
    1 1/3 ts Mustard, Dijon
    3/16 c Almonds, chopped
    2 tb Onions, green, chopped
    1/3 c Cream, heavy

    INSTRUCTIONS

    Position rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 300. Pour oil into
small baking pan.  Add garlic and stir to coat. Roast until garlic is
golden and soft, about 45 minutes.
Cool.  Transfer garlic with oil to processor and chop. Add cream cheese,
sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard and puree. Transfer to bowl.
Stir in almonds and onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Beat
cream to stiff peaks.  Fold into cheese mixture. Cover and refrigerate
several hours to allow flavors to mellow. Serve at room temperature. Great
baked potato topping!
