It is fashionable to follow the view of some psychologists that the self is a bundle of needs and that personal growth is the business of progressively meeting these needs. Many Christians go along with such beliefs… One mark of the almost total success of this new morality is that the Christian church, traditionally keen on mortifying the desires of the flesh, on crucifying the needs of the self in pursuit of Christ’s likeness, has eagerly adopted the language of needs for itself. We now hear that Jesus will meet your every need, as though He were some kind of Divine psychiatrist or Divine detergent and as though God were simply to serve us (Tony Walter).

I am a Calvinist; I believe in election and predestination; but I would not dream of putting it under the heading of essential. I put it under the heading of non-essential… You are not saved by your precise understanding of how this great salvation comes to you. What you must be clear about is that you are lost and damned, hopeless and helpless, and that nothing can save you but the grace of God in Jesus Christ and only Him crucified, bearing the punishment of your sins, dying, rising again, ascending, sending the Spirit, regeneration. Those are the essentials… While I myself hold very definite and strong views on the subject, I will not separate from a man who cannot accept and believe the doctrines of election and predestination, and is Arminian, as long as he tells me that we are all saved by grace, and as long as the Calvinist agrees, as he must, that God calls all men everywhere to repentance. As long as both are prepared to agree about these things I say we must not break fellowship. So I put election into the category of non-essentials.

Swiss Steak (3 Versions, Stove Top, Crockpot, Oven)

INGREDIENTS

1 lb Boneless beef round steak, cut 3/4, inch thick
2 tb All-purpose flour
1/4 ts Salt
1/4 ts Pepper
1 tb Cooking oil
1 cn (14 1.2-oz.) tomatoes, cut up
1 sm Onion, sliced and separated into rings
1/2 c Celery, 1 stalk
1/2 c Sliced carrots, (1 med.)
1/2 ts Dried thyme, crushed
2 c Hot cooked noodles or rice

INSTRUCTIONS

(STOVE TOP VERSION): Trim fat from meat. Cut into 4 serving-size pieces.
Combine flour, salt and pepper. Using the notched side of a meat mallet,
evenly pound the flour mixture into the meat. In a large skillet brown the
meat on both sides in hot oil. Drain off fat. Add undrained tomatoes,
onion, celery, carrot and thyme. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat. Cover and
simmer about 1 1/4 hours or until meat is tender. Skim off fat. Serve with
noodles or rice. Makes 4 servings.
(CROCKPOT VERSION): Trim fat from meat. Cut into 4 serving-size pieces.
Omit flour and pounding meat. Brown the meat on both sides in hot oil. In a
electric crockpot place onion, celery, carrots, sprinkle with thyme, 2
tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca, salt and pepper. Pour undrained tomatoes
over vegetables. Add meat. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 12
hours. Serve as above.
(OVEN VERSION): Prepare and brown meat in skillet as directed above for
stove top version. Transfer meat to a 2-quart baking dish. In the same
skillet combine undrained tomatoes, onion, celery, carrot, and thyme. Bring
to boiling, scraping up any browned bits in the pan. Pour over meat. Cover
and bake in a 350 oven about 1 hour or till tender. Serve as above.
