Satan hates God’s children. It is his utmost ambition to see us fail in our spiritual responsibilities. Specifically, his goal is to do whatever it takes to take us off the spiritual front lines. Doubt. Distractions. Greater love for other things. Sin. Laziness. It’s subtle, its strategic, it's sinister. His methods are predictable, but missed by those spiritually asleep and not alert. That’s why we read in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

It grieves me that so many believers view the doctrine of God's sovereignty as a deterrent to a healthy, vibrant prayer life. That kind of thinking demonstrates an inadequate, incomplete and unacceptable understanding, both of God's sovereignty and of prayer. In truth, we pray because God is sovereign – He alone has power over all human events. In praying, we don't run from His sovereignty, we run to it. It's absolutely true that God is sovereign over every detail of our lives. Job acknowledged that even the number of every person's days is determined (Job 14:5). Life and death are in His hands (Jas. 4:15). Yet we eat and breathe and sleep and take measures to avoid any kind of calamity that might end our lives prematurely. Why? That's the very same question as, 'Why pray if God is sovereign?' Here's the answer to why we need to breathe, and why we need to pray: God ordains the means as well as the end. And our prayers are one of the important means by which He accomplishes His will and glorifies Himself in the process.

Vegetable Gumbo

INGREDIENTS

1 Onion; chopped
1/2 Green pepper; diced
2 Ribs Celery; diced
1 Clove garlic; minced
1 lb Okra; sliced, fresh, frozen
1 lb Tomatoes; fresh, or canned
2 c Corn; fresh, frozen, canned
1 ts Vegetable Bouillon granules;
1/2 c White Grape Juice;
1/2 c Water;
1/4 ts Tabasco sauce;
1/4 ts Paprika;
2 tb Fresh parsley; chopped
1 tb Basil or Rosemary; minced
Vegetable coating spray

INSTRUCTIONS

Method: In a large heavy stew pot, place bouillon and 1/2 C white
grape juice, onion, green pepper, celery garlic, cook until tender,
5-7 minutes. Add other ingredients, cook over low heat, stirring
occasionally to keep from sticking to bottom. Cover and simmer gently
until corn and okra are done. (or simmer in crockpot 6-7 hours)
Note:  Cut fresh corn from cob with a sharp knife, then scrape the
remaining corn off the cob.  Four ears will make about two cups. If
you use dried herbs, rub them with the palms of your hands before
adding to the pot, this releases their aroma and goodness. Exchanges:
