God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

There are basically two ways to read the Bible — as a book of law, or as a book of promise. Our natural religious psychology wants to read the Bible as law: “God is explaining here how I can win his favor.” A law-hermeneutic is the pre-understanding we naturally bring to our Bible reading, every page. But in Galatians 3 Paul explains that he reads the Bible as a book of promise, and he wants us to as well. He sees every page of the Bible as gracious promise from God to undeserving sinners. Is there law in the Bible? Yes. But it was “added” (v. 19). Law was inserted after the promises to Abraham were established. It is promise that comes first (Genesis 12), then law comes later (Exodus 20). It is promise, therefore, that defines the all-encompassing framework within which we are to read everything else in the Bible... Every page [in the Bible], most deeply understood, shines forth as a promise of grace to sinners in Christ.

God unleashed the full extent of His fury on Jesus Christ. As Isaiah put it in Isaiah 13:9, “Wrath with fierce anger.” Hell came there. What is hell? Hell is where God punishes people forever. Hell is where God pours out His fury on people forever. God is the power behind the punishment in hell. When you say that hell is being separated from God, only in the sense of His comforting presence, not in the sense of His punishing presence. He is the one who destroys both soul and body in hell. He is the King of hell, Satan is not. And God, who is the punisher of all the souls in eternal hell, shows up in the darkness of Calvary to punish His Son, and He gives His Son eternal hell on behalf of all who would ever believe.

4 Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers; broken into 1/4"
Pieces
1 Layer Vanilla Sponge Cake – (6" round); (see recipe)

INSTRUCTIONS

Line a 3-quart metal mixing bowl with plastic wrap, and leave the edges
overhanging. Place lined bowl in freezer for 10 minutes; this will be the
mold. Chill the bowl of an electric mixer as well. Place the pistachio ice
cream in the chilled mixer bowl. Using the paddle attachment, beat on low
speed until ice cream is spreadable, about 30 seconds. Remove chilled mold
from freezer. Using a rubber spatula, coat inside of mold with all the
pistachio ice cream, making a 1/2-inch-thick layer. Return mold and empty
mixer bowl to the freezer for 30 minutes. Place the vanilla ice cream in
chilled mixer bowl. Beat on low speed until spreadable, about 30 seconds.
Remove mold from freezer. Using the rubber spatula, coat pistachio layer
with the vanilla ice cream, making a 1/4-inch-thick layer. Return mold and
empty mixer bowl to freezer for 30 minutes. Place sorbet in chilled mixer
bowl. Beat on low speed until sorbet has softened, about 1 minute. Fold in
wafer pieces. Remove mold from freezer. Pack sorbet into center, making an
even layer 1/3-inch below ice cream. Cover sorbet portion with sponge cake;
trim cake if necessary. Return mold to freezer until completely hardened.
To serve, place a serving plate upside-down on top of the mold. Holding
plate against mold, invert both. Place a hot, wet kitchen towel over the
mold. Remove the metal bowl. Immediately before serving, remove the plastic
wrap. Serves 12.
