We Love God!

God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

We may preach with great eloquence, we may have unanswerable arguments, but if we are preaching to the lost, we must remember that they are people whose minds have been blinded by the god of this age. Our most eloquent appeals will make no impact unless a Sovereign God causes His light to dawn upon their hearts. Our approach in preaching should not be to say merely that we are offering something beneficial that you our hearer can and should take up at any time. We have a more disquieting message. We are to tell the lost, 'You are slaves. You are blind. You cannot even understand what we are saying unless God in His mercy enables you.' The Lord must illumine. Our preaching can succeed only “in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Cor. 2:4). That must be the starting point for preaching the Lord God will honor.

[Jesus is] not saying, “Take absolutely no oaths at all,” because Jesus Himself took and made oaths. You remember what Jesus said to His disciples in the upper room in John 13? “I tell you I will never again eat of this meal until we eat it in the Kingdom.” He was making an oath. He was saying, “I’m never going to sit down with you and eat this supper until we are eating the marriage feast of the Lamb together.” It was a pledge to His people – that He was going to be faithful until He brought them to glory. Paul made oaths. So Jesus’ point is not, “Don’t ever make oaths.” His point is, “Don’t ever use God’s name in an oath with subterfuge.” You always tell the truth. And even if you don’t invoke God’s name, whenever you are being called upon to tell you are witnessing as to whether you are from God or from the evil one.

Here I adapted an 18th century English spice cake recipe which also
makes nice cupcakes. Powder saffron, work into butter. Cream butter
and sugar, add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla and caraway. Sift
together dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients to batter alternately
with milk. Mix in zest. Pour into greased, floured sheet cake or
cupcake pan. Preheat oven and bake at 350F (175C) for about 1 1/4 hrs.
Check after 1 hour. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then on rack. Serve
with dollop of Currant Hard Sauce. CURRANT HARD SAUCE: Powder
saffron, work into chilled cream cheese. Cream together butter and
cheese. Beat until light and fluffy. Mix in remaining ingredients and
chill. Serve at room temperature. From "Wild About Saffron++A
