Ultimately, men learn masculinity from God. God is not male. He does not have a body. But God is pure, unadulterated masculinity. Ultimately, He alone is the Christian father’s role model. His masculinity expresses itself as the willingness to initiate…the willingness to initiate is the heart and soul of God’s masculinity. God serves us by initiating. He initiated creation. He initiated our redemption. He came to us in the incarnation. We didn’t go to Him. This willingness is most likely what God means when He refers to Himself with masculine pronouns. Although God does not have a male body, He is the ultimate initiator. He is the ultimate servant-leader. In this sense, God the Father is absolute masculinity.

[Jonathan] Edwards bases this distinction on the difference between two ways of knowing. On the one hand, there is knowledge that is merely speculative, notional, a mere cognitive awareness of some truth. On the other hand, there is what Edwards calls “the sense of the heart” in which one recognizes the beauty or amiableness or sweetness of that truth and feels pleasure and delight in it. It is the difference between knowing or believing that God is holy and having a “sense” of or enjoying His holiness. “There is a difference between having a rational judgment that honey is sweet, and having a sense of its sweetness.” Thus “when the heart is sensible of the beauty and amiableness of a thing, it necessarily feels pleasure in the apprehension.”

Old-fashioned Italian Spaghetti Sauce

INGREDIENTS

2 T Olive oil
4 T Cubed salt pork
2 Cloves garlic, diced
1 Onion, diced
2 6-oz.cans tomato paste
1 1/2 lb Fresh plum tomatoes or 1
28 ounce can plum
tomatoes
1 T Sugar, or to taste
1 lb Italian sausage
Salt and pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

Put olive oil and diced salt pork in a saucepan and saute until salt
pork is browned. Remove salt pork from pan and discard. Add onion and
garlic to pan, and brown slightly. Add tomato paste, and stir until
all oil is absorbed. Stir in the tomatoes, and mix well over medium
heat. Add 1 large can of water plus 2 cans of water from paste cans.
Add sugar, season with salt and pepper, and simmer for 2 hours or
until sauce is desired thickness. Fry Italian sausage until brown,  and
add to sauce 30 minutes before sauce is done.  Serving Ideas : Haftford
