CHRIST

CHRISTIAN COMMENT A Greek word meaning anointed, used to designate God’s Anointed One, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Hebrew word is Messiah, and the Christ of the Bible fulfilled the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. It was foretold He would be of the seed of a woman (Genesis 3:15), a descendant of Abraham; (Genesis 12:3); and David (II Samuel 7:12). His place of birth was foretold (Micah 5:2), as was His Deity (Isaiah 9:6) and substitutionary Atonement (Isaiah 53). Even minute details, such as His having brothers and sisters, were prophesied (Psalms 69:8).

The Christ of the Bible fulfilled all this and more, and the testimony of the New Testament is that He is a perfect Saviour (Heb. 7:25; 10:11-18).

The Christ portrayed by the Roman Catholic church, while having historical similarities to the Christ of the Bible, is different. The Roman Catholic “Christ” is not considered to have fully paid for salvation, as there are sacraments, prayers and works to be fulfilled by each individual before salvation is complete.
