SEVEN STEPS WITH GOD

‘The Seven Steps’ is a method of Bible meditation for groups. It is being used in some churches in Africa and seems to be useful for groups where there is a mixture of experienced Bible readers and new believers.

In African groups, the leader prepares a ‘yellow card’ listing the seven steps and hangs it on the wall.

  1. WE INVITE THE LORD

One member invites the Lord to be present. He’s already there, but this helps everyone to be open to him.

2. WE READ THE TEXT

A volunteer reads the text.

3. WE LOOK AT THE TEXT AGAIN

The leader asks what words strike you in a personal way? Members read aloud the words which have impresses them. There is no discussion, just a moment of silence after each contribution. Allow the message to “soak in.”

4. WE LET GOD SPEAK TO US

Read the passage again.
Have a time of silence – make it an exact period e.g. five minutes. Be open to God.

5. WE SHARE WHAT WE HAVE HEARD IN OUR HEARTS

No preaching or discussing, just sharing insights and feelings.

6. WE SEARCH TOGETHER

Ask: what does the Lord want us to do? Which word will we take home? Share needs and hopes.
Determine any action which will be taken by the group.

7. WE PRAY TOGETHER

The Words of Scripture become food for prayer, invite personal spontaneous prayer.
