- Peter Waldo (a wealthy merchant of Lyons, France)
- Emphasized the Scripture in opposition to Catholic
- Translated portions of the Bible into the vernacular
- Stressed preaching (even by laymen)
- Taught that the Roman Catholic Church was not infallible
- Excomunicated by pope in late 1100’s
- Sent out 70 disciples (Waldenses) into France, Italy, Spain and Germany
- John Wycliffe (1320-84) was a Biblical reformer
- His efforts brought about the 1st English translation
- Opposed infallability of pope
- Emphasized the invisible Church
- His followers (Lollards) spread all over Britain and to the continent
- John Hus (1369-1415)
- Similar theology to Wycliffe
- Condemned as a heretic by Council of Constance
- Burned at the stake
- Martin Luther (1483-1546)
- Albert, Archbishop of Mainz made arrangement with Pope Leo X to raise money by the sale of indulgences (half to Albert & half to help build St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome)
- Sale was forbidden at Wittenberg but citizens traveled to other towns to buy them.
- This led Luther to post his “95 Theses” on the door of Wittenberg Church (Oct. 31, 1517) and sent a copy to the pope in Rome
- Excommunicated in 1518 but Frederic, ruler of Saxony would not release him to Rome for punishment
- At the Diet of Speyer (1529) it was resolved to forbid further spread of the Lutheran movement. Against this action PROTEST was entered by a number of German cities and from this the name PROTESTANT was given all
- The REFORMATION followed this
