God’s grace is not given to make us feel better, but to glorify Him… Good feelings may come, or they may not, but that is not the issue. The issue is whether or not we honor God by the way we respond to our circumstances.

INTRODUCTION: Verse 3, do whatever they say–not what they do.

I. THEY TAUGHT PRAYER (v. 14 vs. vv. 5-7)

  1. They taught to pray long prayers (v. 14)
  2. They stole the glory from God by their pride in prayer

II. THEY TAUGHT EVANGELISM (v. 15 vs. v. 13)

  1. They worked hard to get others into their fold
  2. They taught them such impossible doctrine that they fell

III. THEY TAUGHT TITHING (v. 23 vs. vv. 16-22)

  1. They would tithe the smallest increase
  2. They emphasized the physical above the spiritual

IV. THEY TAUGHT RIGHTEOUSNESS (v. 28 vs. vv. 25-28)

  1. They wanted perfection
  2. They practice “outward righteousness”
  3. THEY TAUGHT HONOR FOR GOD’S PROPHETS (vv. 28, 30 vs. vv. 31-32,37)
  4. They built tombs for them and garnished them
  5. They refused to hear them
