God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)
It is significant that we are described as being slightly lower than the angels rather than being slightly higher than the beasts. Our place and privilege is to be a mediating figure, but to be one who looks up rather than down. When we sever the tie that binds us to God and try to cast off God's rule, we do not rise up to take God's place, as we desire to do, but rather sink to a more bestial level. In fact, we come to think of ourselves as beasts ('the naked ape') or, even worse, as machines.

INSTRUCTIONS
Saute the diced vegetables in butter. Mix flour and mustard into saut\zed
vegetables. Add the chicken or vegetable stock to mixture and cook for
five minutes. Break broccoli into small flowerets; cut stems into
bite-sizes pieces. Steam until tender-crisp. Add beer and cheeses to the
soup. Simmer 10-15 minutes. Check seasonings. To serve, place some
broccoli into a soup bowl and ladle the soup over it. NOTES: Because of the
cheese, this soup doesn't survive a night in the refrigerator very well.
