A paradox is an apparent contradiction. Grace and truth aren’t really contradictory. Jesus didn’t switch on truth, then turn it off so He could switch on grace. Both are permanently switched on in Jesus. Both should be switched on in us… Truth without grace breeds a self-righteousness legalism that poisons the church and pushes the world from Christ. Grace without truth breeds moral indifference and keeps people from seeing their need for Christ. Attempts to “soften” the gospel by minimizing truth keep people from Jesus. Attempts to 'toughen” the gospel by minimizing grace keep people from Jesus. It’s not enough for us to offer grace or truth. We must offer both.
Pride is the idolatry of the self. It is the nature of pride as competition with God – the displacing of God by the self at the center – that has led many Christian thinkers through the ages to regard pride (superbia) as the mother sin and the essential element in all sin.
To the beaten egg yolks, add the sugar and milk, and cook all together. Add
the flour which has been mixed with a little cold water and cook until
mixture thickens. Add vanilla and let mixture cool. Mix half of the
cocoanut with the custard filling and pour into baked pie shells. Beat the
whites of eggs until stiff and frothy, add 3 Tbsp sugar and spread on top
of pies, sprinkle with remaining cocoanut. Brown in 325-F oven about 10
