Applesauce Date Bars

INGREDIENTS

1/4 c Unsalted butter; softened
1/2 c Packed brown sugar
1 Egg
1 ts Vanilla
1 1/2 c All-purpose flour
1 ts Cinnamon
1 ts Unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 ts Baking powder
1/2 ts Baking soda
1/4 ts Ground nutmeg
1 pn Ground cloves
1 pn Salt
3/4 c Dates; chopped
1 c Applesauce
TOPPING
1/2 c Icing sugar
2 ts Orange juice

INSTRUCTIONS

In bowl, beat butter with sugar; beat in egg and vanilla. In separate
bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda,
nutmeg, cloves and salt; stir in dates. Fold flour mixture into
butter mixture alternately with applesauce [use unsweetened
applesauce for best flavour.], making 3 additions of dry and 2 of
applesauce.
Spread in greased 8-inch square cake pan; Bake in 350F 180C oven for
30 minutes or until tester inserted into centre comes out clean. Let
cool completely on rack.
Topping: In small bowl, whisk together icing sugar and orange juice;
drizzle over cake. Cut into bars.
[Bars can be covered and stored in refrigerator for up to 4 days or
frozen in airtight container for up to 1 month.]
