“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” If God really means that, then I don’t need to crave after money as the source of my security and identity and pleasure. I can find all that and more in the enjoyment of intimacy with the God who promises never to leave! The bondage to money and what it can do for us is only broken by believing that God can do far more. Money makes a promise. So does God. The question is: Whom will you believe?

20		Venison chops
6	oz	Beer
1	lg	Onion, chopped
4		Pats of butter
2	oz	Garlic

INSTRUCTIONS

Place aluminum foil on hot grill with sides folded up,
so there is no runoff of juices.  Place chops on foil.
Add beer, chopped onion and butter. Sprinkle garlic
salt on chops each time you turn them.  When chops are
done, remove foil from grill.  Place chops back on
grill and sprinkle with garlic salt each time you turn
them until charcoal black.

And what stunned me about this train of thought is that many professing Christians seem to aim at just this, and call it Christianity. Paul did not see his relation to Christ as the key to maximizing his physical comforts and pleasures in this life. No, Paul’s relation to Christ was a call to choose suffering – a suffering that was beyond what would make atheism “meaningful” or “beautiful” or “heroic.” It was a suffering that would have been utterly foolish and pitiable to choose if there is no resurrection into the joyful presence of Christ… Judge for yourself. How many Christians do you know who could say, “The lifestyle I have chosen as a Christian would be utterly foolish and pitiable if there is no resurrection?”
