INGREDIENTS

1/2 c Sugar
2 tb Cornstarch
1/2 ts Salt
1/4 ts Ground cinnamon
1 c Water
3 c Fresh or frozen blackberries; or a mixture of berr
1 c Flour
2 ts Baking powder
1/2 ts Salt
2 tb Shortening
1 Egg; lightly beaten
2 tb Milk
1/4 c Butter; softened
1/2 c Sugar
1 ts Grated lemon peel
1/4 ts Ground cinnamon

INSTRUCTIONS

Recipe by: Taste of Home BERRIES: In a saucepan, combine sugar,
cornstarch, salt and cinnamon from the berry ingredients. Add water.
Cook until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in berries and cook over
low heat for 5 minutes. Pour into a greased 8" square baking pan. Set
aside. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in
shortening until coarse crumbs form. In another bowl, mix egg and
milk. Add to flour mixture; mix to make a smooth dough. Knead for
several minutes. Roll into a 12x8" rectangle. Spread with butter.
Combine sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon; sprinkle over dough. Starting
at a long end, roll up; seal edges. Cut into 9 slices. Place slices
(still rolled up) over berry mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 22-25
minutes or until golden brown.
