Best Comes Last BEST COMES LAST Jn. 2:10
PURPOSE: To convince Christians of the value of serving
Christ & sinners of the waste of lives in sin.
INTRODUCTION:
- Religion–a lamp burning dimly in a sepulchre?
- If a lamp, it burns BRIGHTLY
- Not in a sepulchre, either
- We need Christ in death & in life
- Some never think of Christ untill face to face with death or sorrow
- Why not love Him in times of gladness as well?
- Jesus at home at marriage as well as funeral
- If Jesus is present at wedding, no reason to say as some, “Oh! how many torments lie in the small circle of a wedding ring.”
- The world gives its best first, and then it is
not lasting, for “earth’s pleasures come in cups, not in fountains,” and the supply is limited and soon exhausted.
- Not so with Christ rather ,the best comes last…
- IN CREATION:
- “The earth was without form and void”
- The first step to improvement was LIGHT
- Successive steps of improvement: atmosphere; seas, land, vegetation; heavenly bodies; animal life sea & air; animal life on earth
- Last, MAN, the crowning work of creation
II. IN THE REVELATION OF GOD:
- Law of demands
- Guidance of prophets
- “In the fullness of time”–HIS SON
- The Holy Ghost IN us
III. IN CHRIST’S LIFE
- Poor baby born in a stable
- “Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief”
- Misunderstood by his own–hated by many
- The cross–its agony & shame
- Then the Resurrection & ascension
- Soon–He will come in His glory!
IV. IN THE CHRISTIAN’S LIFE
- Bitterness of repentence followed by sweetness of forgiveness
- Cross-bearing followed by crown-wearing
- Disowned by the world–claimed by Christ
- Pilgrimage followed by inheritance of all things
SUMMARY:
- Everything in God’s hands gets better with time
- Creation, revelation, Christ’s experience, and the Cristian’s life
- The life of a sinner is different
- Sin may seem good now but… you haven’t tasted the wine of Jesus!
- Get older, more guilt ridden
- Set in ways of sin
- Finally, judgment & eternal damnation
- It can be different for the sinner if you will
