You see, the standards you set for yourself and your ministry are directly related to your view of God. If you are feeding your soul everyday on the grace and glory of God, if you are in worshipful awe of His wisdom and power, if you are spiritually stunned by His faithfulness and love, and if you are daily motivated by His presence and promises, then you want to do everything you can to capture and display that glory to the people God has placed in your care. It is your job as a pastor to pass this glory down to another generation, and it is impossible for you to do that if you are not being awestricken by God’s glory yourself.

BINDLOOS A LOOK AT THE USE OF THE EXPRESSION “BINDING & LOOSING” ———————————————————– 1-13-91 [DFJ]

In Matthew 16:18-19 Jesus says, 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (NIV)

Later he said essentially the same thing to the rest of the apostles in Matt 18:18, 18 “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. (NIV)

Ephesians 2:20 tells us the church is “built upon the foundation on the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.” The apostles’ ministry was foundational in that they constituted the authority and formation of ministry within the early church as directed by the Holy Spirit. There’s an example of that in Acts 15. Some people associated with the church claimed circumcision was a requirement for salvation. The apostles’ decision against that position became binding on all the churches,

Acts 15:22-31 22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers. 23 With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. 24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul– 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. The Holy Spirit orchestrated their dicision according to God’s will (v.28)

After Jesus commanded His disciples to receive the Holy Spirit in John 20:22, He then informed them, “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained” (v.23). He was not giving them the power to forgive sins-only our Lord Jesus Christ can do that.

John 20:21-23 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (NIV)

Mark 2:7-10 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, `Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, `Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” He said to the paralytic, (NIV)

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name

under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (NIV)

Rather, He gave them the authority to declare what God has already done in heaven

Matt 6:10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The apostles were given the authority to bind and loose-speak and act under God’s authority-as the foundational representatives for the church. They did not act arbitrarily, nor did they operate apart from God’s Holy Spirit

Acts 2:42-47 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (NIV)

Acts 4:28-33 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. Some misapply this teaching to include binding Satan. There is no Scriptural injunction to bind Satan, nor is there any biblical example of that ever occurring. Satan remains at large as the “prince of the power of the air” until he is chained or bound (by an angel, not a human being) during the millennial reign of Jesus Christ.

Eph 2:2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (NIV)

Rev 20:1-3 1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. (NIV)

The disciples cast out demons, but they never bound them or Satan himself. Jesus did not use the term bind when casting out deamons or when he spoke authority to Satan.

Now, I understand that some look at the following passages of Scripture as proof texts for the Binding and Loosing concept, however some have seen these passages to mean, arresting ( stopping ) the activity of Satan by the Word of God in the Name of Jesus Christ. Stopping Satan’s hold on a possesed individule durring the act of exorcism ( deliverance ).

Matt 12:29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house. (NIV)

Mark 3:27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house. (NIV)

Luke 11:20-23 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. 21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. 23 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters. In looking to Scripture in reguard to instructions concerning how to handel Satan in our lives, here on earth, only a few passages are found.

  • Where did Daniel stand with God, in reguard to the Prince of Persia?

Daniel 10:1-21 1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision. 2 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over. 4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5 I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of the finest gold around his waist. 6 His body was like chrysolite, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. 7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; the men with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground. 10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and

  • How did Daniel react to the persecution of his people?

Daniel 9:1-27 1 In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom– 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would HE last seventy years.

The tendency with us is to look at the battle with the view of the flesh.

If we could only grasp the fact that through submission and humbling ourselves before the Lord of Hosts we would see the Lord’s deliverance.

2 Kings 6:8-23 8 Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in such and such a place.” 9 The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.” 10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places. 11 This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Will you not tell me which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?” 12 “None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.” 13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.” 14 Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. This is why it is called the Valley of Beracah to this day. 27 Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. 28 They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the LORD with harps and lutes and trumpets. 29 The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. In this study it is not my intention to destroy the delicate ballance between Faith and Teaching but to try to express the methods that appear to be more sucessful with God. These methods, I believe, are apparent in Scripture and have been proven to be effective.

  1. TO LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, SOUL, MIND, AND STRENGTH- LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF
  2. SUBMIT TO GOD IN ALL YOUR WAYS-HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE HIS MIGHTY HAND- FOR IT IS THEN AND THERE THAT YOU WILL FIND YOUR REDEMPTION AND SALVATION THROUGH THE KING OF KINGS, LORD OF LORDS, GOD’S ONLY BEGOTTEN SON- OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST
