Butter-Nut Balls (M Stewart)

INGREDIENTS

2 Sticks unsalted butter; at room temperature, (1 cup)
1/2 c Sugar
2 Eggs; separated
1 ts Grated lemon rind
2 1/2 c All-purpose flour
2 tb Milk
1 c Walnuts; fine-chopped
12 Candied cherries; halved (to 15)

INSTRUCTIONS

MAKES 24 TO 36 COOKIES
In a mixing bowl, cream the butter; add the sugar gradually, beating well.
Add the egg yolks and rind and beat until fluffy. Stir in half the flour.
Add the milk and beat well, then add the remaining flour. Knead slightly to
blend.
