Casuistry

CASUISTRY

BASIC R.C. BELIEF The science followed by moral theologians in solving moral problems. This often leads to incorrect conclusions; Roman Catholic casuists often apply humanistic moral ethics that distort Bible principles.

POST VATICAN II A Roman Catholic priest, David Shanahan, told his people that they could steal without moral guilt if it were impossible under an unjust system to get a job paying enough to feed their families. The JOHANNESBURG DAILY MAIL (8/22/70) quoted him, “I told my parishioners they were not morally bound to obey unjust laws and that they were not morally wrong if they told a lie to avoid any penalty under an unjust law.”

From THE LIVING FAITH IN A WORLD OF CHANGE, Pfeiffer, S.J., p. 41. “A friend of mine . . . was about to be drafted. He agonized over his decision. The law of the land was calling him to participate in the Vietnam war; the law of his conscience called him to refuse to take part in what he judged an unjust and immoral war. . . Religious educators are concerned that the young become skilled in a process of moral decision-making that takes into acount the force of laws while recognizing the limitations of a law-centered morality. A Christian approach takes into account the human values at stake together with the wisdom acquired from man’s experience.”
