INGREDIENTS

1 c Applesauce
1 1/2 c (approx. 6 oz) cinnamon
1/3 c Non-toxic white glue (such as Elmer's)

INSTRUCTIONS

In a medium size bowl, mix the applesauce, cinnamon and glue to form a
ball. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (can be left to chill overnight).
To prevent sticking, sprinkle a little extra cinnamon on a large cutting
board and roll out the dough ball to a 1/4 inch thickness (not too thin or
the hearts will be fragile. Cut out hearts. Using a straw or toothpick
punch a hole in the top center of each heart (or, if planning to make
garlands instead of ornaments, make two holes). Place the shapes on a
cooling rack and let dry for about 2-3 days. When color has changed from
deep brown to light brown, they're ready.
Loop red ribbon through the single holes to make ornaments or string ribbon
(or natural twine with one or two red beads knotted in between the hearts)
through the double holes to fashion a garland. Yields about 30 medium
hearts.
Variations: Add 1 tbsp. each ground cloves and nutmeg
