In the New Testament there is a fine distinction between teaching and preaching. The preacher is described as more of a “herald” (see 1 Tim. 2:7; 2 Tim. 1:11). He is to herald forth the good news, much as a town crier would enthusiastically announce good news. Good teaching will have some aspects of heralding about it, and it should involved some motivation and application. Good preaching will certainly involve teaching also, but preaching does not stop there. Preaching also involves a dynamic that strongly calls for actions, whether it is a call to repentance and faith, a call to service, or a call to carry the Gospel to others.

1/4	c	Green onions, sliced
1/4	c	Mayonnaise, reduced calorie.
1	tb	Mustard, prepared
1	ts	Gingerroot, grated

INSTRUCTIONS

*packed in its own juice
Combine cabbage, pineapple, water chestnuts, parsley, and onion. Cover and
chill.  For dressing, combine mayonnaise, mustard, and gingerroot. Cover
and chill. Spoon dressing over the cabbage mixture; toss to coat.
PER SERVING: 57 cal., 1g pro., 9g carbo., 2g fat, 0mg chol., 80mg sodium.

In our preaching, that is what should always be happening. In his obituary of the great German conductor, Otto Klemperer, Neville Cardus spoke of the way in which Klemperer 'set the music in motion,' maintaining throughout a deliberately anonymous, self-effacing style in order that the musical notes might articulate themselves in their own integrity through him. So it must be in preaching; Scripture itself must do all the talking, and the preacher's task is simply to 'set the Bible in motion.'
