Eventide

EVENTIDE

Life expectancy in North America has improved tremendously during the last few decades. Men and women in Canada and the United States may hope to live to a ripe old age of well over 70 years.

Many complain that old age is not only a blessing but often means loneliness, problems and sorrow.

David the Psalmist knew of the fear of old age when he wrote:

“Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.” -Psalms 71:9

“Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.” -Psalms 71:18

God has promised that He will never forsake us, neither when we are young nor when we are old.

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” -lsaiah 46:4

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” -Hebrews 13:5,6

Throughout the ages men and women have testified of the goodness of God in their lives.

“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” -Psalms 37:25

There is beauty in old age!

“The hoary head (gray head) is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. -Proverbs 20:29

Aged men and women may serve God by witnessing for their Saviour.

“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.” -Psalms 92:14-15

“And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity: And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” -Luke 2:36-38

All who love the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour and King may look forward to a glorious future.

“…For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” -ll Timothy 4:6-8

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new,” -Revelation 21:1,4,5a

Are you looking forward to meeting the Lord Jesus Christ?

Only in Him and through Him the future looks bright in the eventide of our lives.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” -l John 1:9
