PLANNING AHEAD FOR CHRISTMAS, 2006By Lois Breneman, © 2006, Heart to Heart Newsletter, [email protected]As I sent out a couple December birthday cards with the "Happy Birthday" postage stamps that I like to use for those occasions, it suddenly dawned on me how perfect those stamps would be for Christmas cards! A rare original idea! After all, it was Jesus' birthday we were celebrating, right? I also used a Precious Moments rubber stamp of Baby Jesus in the manger with an angel next to Him - and stamped that image near the postage stamp. Then just below the "Happy Birthday" stamp, I wrote, "Dear Jesus," as in "Happy Birthday, Dear Jesus!" You may want to be on the lookout for "Happy Birthday" postage stamps to use next Christmas!
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CENTURY MAKES! - THE YEAR 1905Author unknown - Contributed by Linda Crosby in Virginia
This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1905. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 1905 :The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home . Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had no college education. Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. StrokeCrossword puzzles, canned beer and ice tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then a pharmacist said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." (Shocking!)
Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.

THE PERPETUAL CALENDAR
Studying a perpetual calendar is interesting! If you dont know the day of the week on which you entered the world, this is how you can find out. If you have saved some special unused calendars, because of the beautiful scenic pictures, cute babies or animals, you can squeeze some more use out of them! For leap years, you have to go back farther for an identical calendar - 2008 is the next leap year. If you still have a nice calendar from 2001, save it for 2007! Or if you have one from 1995, you can use that one this year! I know this isn't a great money-saving tip, but it is a way of still using nice calendars that you may have filed away.
For This Year . . . . . You can use an identical calendar from these past years.

HOW TO PURCHASE A SWIVEL SWEEPER FOR QUICK CLEAN-UPSI love my swivel sweeper and we gave our three children each one for Christmas. Our two year old grandson can even vacuum very well with this rechargeable, cordless, lightweight vacuum that picks up surface dirt on hard floors as well as on carpets, and is easy on the back! Since I mentioned this sweeper in Heart to Heart last month, there have been several inquiries on how to purchase one. At swivelsweeper.com you can see what it looks like and all your questions will be answered. Two hand held swivel sweepers currently come free with a purchase at the web site or by calling 1-800-472-2581. Before Christmas a few stores were selling them for $39.99, and with no shipping cost, of course, and that was a better deal. If you decide to get one, you may want to call Penney's, Belk, Walgreen's and Walmart before ordering one.GREAT MOMMY TIPS FROM A MOTHER OF 4From Regina Landis in PARelaxation for Mom and Playtime for Children - All at the Same Time!
Here is something I have done when my children were little: When Mom is weary and wishes to rest, and the little ones seem to have lots of energy, I would lie on the floor, with a comfy pillow under my head, and put my arms out. The children would then drive small plastic vehicles, tractors, etc. up my arms and across my back, you can even prop your feet up on a chair, so they can go up the "hill." I have been surprised how long they will play this. It can be relaxing and you get a back rub to boot!Helping to Combat Sibling RivalryAlso, to combat sibling rivalry, each child has their "week." It is their turn to go first, pick a game, sit by mom, do the dishes, whatever was causing a squabble. This way, they each get a turn to be first, and it seems to help their respect of each other - "It's his turn, etc." No, it hasn't solved everything, but has helped a LOT in our family!
SMALL BLOCKS OF TIME EQUAL BIG FUN
Copyright 2002 Deborah Shelton - Used with permission - www.fiveminuteparent.comHow is it possible to make more time together when the days are shorter during the winter? Use these ideas to come up with more creative ways to spend the time you already have:
Bath Time
* Read a story to your little one while they soak in the tub.
* Place different objects into the bathtub and try to guess which ones will float and which ones will sink to the bottom.
* Make a bubble bath and decorate your child with the bubbles: bubble head; bubble beard; bubble mustache, etc.
* Once their hair is lathered with shampoo, style it into crazy shapes and let them look into a mirror to see their new hairdo.Traffic Jams
* Play Life Guessing. Take a look at people in cars next to you. What do you think they do for a living? Where are they going? Are they famous? What kind of story would someone else make up about you?* Practice perfect speech with tenacious tongue twisters: Terrible traffic turns tantrum time into together time.
* Interview each other! When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? Why? When you are a grown up, what kinds of things will you do that you can't do now?Dinner Time
* Cook together. Always try to plan one dish that children can make, such as a tossed salad or fruit salad. Anything that you can chop and dice, they can mix into a bowl.
* Hand over pots and pans (or plastic bowls for less noise). Fill each with a little bit of rice or uncooked beans, along with a large spoon, and let your little ones pretend to cook.
* Let your children help with the following week's grocery shopping. Give them a grocery sale paper and a pair of scissors (small children who aren't ready for scissors can tear the paper with their hands). Discuss the meals that you want to make and the ingredients for each. They can cut out the ingredients from the paper and put them into an envelope until it's time to go shopping.Deborah Shelton is a mother, a freelance writer, and author of the brand new book, 'The Five Minute Parent: Fun & Fast Activities for You and Your Little Ones.' WHEN KIDS ARE SELF-CENTEREDA Short Parenting Tip by Dr. Scott Turansky - December 8, 2005 - Used by permissionAt least part of the solution for a child's selfishness is to learn how to be a servant. Our culture tends to not like that term, but any good employer, mate, or team player knows how to give up his/her agenda for others at times. That's servanthood.
Children need to learn how to be servants. It's not an elective; it's a required course. Learning to be a servant will help children be better employees, better mates, and even better parents. It may be helpful to make servanthood a focus for a week or a month in your home. You might create a poster giving a working definition of servanthood that goes something like this:
Seeking to overcome self-centeredness by looking for ways to help and care for others.
You might have everyone in the family memorize a verse from the Bible like Philippians 2:4, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Plan ways that each person can practice being a servant. You are already serving your children in more ways that they probably appreciate. In fact, you might ask your child to serve by taking on one of the tasks you usually do in family life. This gives opportunity for you to model appreciation for service.
A child might plan and prepare a meal for the family for example. That's more work than many children realize. The work required to think of others may be just what some children need to get out of some of their selfish patterns. Of course, those being served often respond with delight and appreciation, the built in reward for servanthood. This kind of role reversal can go a long way to teach children to value others and appreciate the things people do for them.
This parenting tip is taken from the book, "Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes, In You and Your Kids." If you'd like a personalized action plan for your own parenting, consider meeting with Dr. Scott Turansky in a Phone Coaching Session. Learn more at www.biblicalparenting.org. A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO MAKE PANCAKES - FAMILY-STYLE PANCAKES!From Linda Crosby with Pampered Chef®, VA, www.pamperedchef.biz/lindacrosbyEvery once in a while a great tip comes my way and I have to share it! A valued customer and a huge stoneware lover once told me that you can pour your entire bowl of pancake batter into our Pampered Chef Stoneware Bar Pan and bake it all at once in the oven (instead of standing over the griddle all morning). If you have a second bar pan, you can do your bacon in that one!Another friend said, "I made my pancakes in the oven this morning just as you suggested. I did a little twist then just cutting them into squares using my pizza cutter. I used my cookie cutters and my children had fun making hearts, stars and letters. It was a fun morning and I got to sit down with my family at the same time and eat together. My 5 year old made that comment to me. 'Mom, you are eating with us!' I have just found a way to make that possible."To make Family-Style Pancakes, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt 2 Tbsp. butter on bar pan in oven for 5 minutes. Mix batter. Remove Bar Pan from oven and place batter in pan. Spread evenly and return to oven 15-20 minutes. Cut and enjoy!POTATO REFRIGERATOR DOUGH
This is the legendary Betty Crocker recipe that Amy Dacyczyn refers to in The Tightwad Gazette, a great book! This recipe can be prepared ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to five days and is delicious and extremely versatile. By substituting whole grain flour for part of the white, you will increase the flavor as well as the nutrients. You can use this dough for dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, dumplings, hot pockets, pizza crust, pretzels, doughnuts, bagels, and other variations.1 pkg. active dry yeast 2/3 cup shortening

2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up. Cover bowl tightly; refrigerate at least 8 hours or until ready to use. (Dough can be kept in the refrigerator up to 5 days at 45 degrees or below. Keep covered.)3. When ready to use, punch down dough. Shape into desired type of bread.Cinnamon Rolls - roll dough out in large rectangle, spread with butter, add cinnamon and sugar. Roll up, slice, and place in round baking pans. Let rise, bake. Glaze with icing made from powdered sugar and a little milk.
Parker House and Crescent Rolls - shape as desired, let rise 20-30 minutes and bake at 400F for 20 minutes.
Doughnuts - shape, let rise, fry in oil. Dip in sugar or add icing.
Bagels- shape, let rise, boil in water and then bake.

A little seven-year-old boy prayed one night before bed for God to give him a baby sister.
When he awakened the next morning, the youngster found that there was no baby. Undaunted, he prayed a second time for the same thing. Still no baby.
Some months later, the boy and his father made a trip to the local hospital. When the two of them arrived, they stepped into a room in the maternity section and found the boy's mother holding a precious baby sister in her right arm, and yet another baby sister in her left! The proud father looked down into the eyes of his son and said, "Now, aren't you glad you prayed?"
To which the little boy responded, "Yes, and aren't you glad I stopped when I did?"

MAKE LISTENING A PRIORITYCopyright © 2001-2006 - By Lori J. Byerly - All Rights Reservedhttp://www.the-generous-wife.com - Used by permissionPriorities ... I encourage you to make listening a priority. I know that may sound a bit odd, but listening is an important skill. It helps you understand those you live with (your husband would be on that list) and will give you many opportunities to bless. If you know what your husband is feeling, you can encourage him. If you know what your husband likes you can bless him. If you know what your husband dreams of, you can inspire.
The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them. Ralph Nichols
COUPLES PRAYING TOGETHER - AND HOW TO GET STARTEDBy Lois Breneman, © 2006, Heart to Heart Newsletter, [email protected]On the way home from our Christmas in Ohio, as my husband and I stopped at a super service station for gas, a friendly young man who worked behind the counter was enjoying talking to John as he got his coffee ready for the road. The young man was so friendly and even offered John a big thick peanut butter cookie -"on the house." In the conversation John mentioned that his wife was with him too, and he was generous in offering an extra cookie for me. When I came up to the counter, the man jokingly said to me, "Oh, don't tell me you're with this guy?" I laughed and patted my husband on the arm as I said, "Yes, I am - I've been married to him for more than 37 years now." He said, "Wow! You know, I've been thinking how I'd love to sit down and talk to people who've been married for a long time and ask them what their secret is." So I just had to give the Lord credit and share with him how we pray together every evening. He seemed grateful that I had shared that and hopefully it made him think about the best Source of couples staying together - a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and communication with Him.I receive many requests to pray for others, and try my best not to let any slip away without praying. I never want to be someone who says, "I will pray," then forget all about it. What I try to do is pray right away for each request as I receive it. Then I write down as many as I can on a pad by our computer and pray later too. The Lord brings many people to mind throughout the day and night, and I pray again. Some of you may wonder how to get started in praying together with your husband. When John and I started a regular, consistent time of praying together each evening, we began praying for just a few minutes, in bed, for the details of our children's lives and ours. That's not the best way, but it did get us started! Soon we had a large index card of written prayer requests and prayed together in the family room. In time that card grew to three, as we saw so many prayer needs. Now it has grown to five cards, which we alternate, so every request is covered at least once every five days. Now I type the lists on the computer to make it easier to revise the prayer requests without starting all over again. We pray together for these prayer concerns every day:Our children (protection, good health, close walk with You, wisdom, guidance, to be led to a godly mate - the one the Lord has chosen for them, a good marriage, their job, etc.)Other family members' needsOur pastor (plus each associate pastor and his family also covered twice every 5 days)Our president, vice president, and their families - by name alsoThe House and Senate, Supreme Court, Cabinet Secretaries, FBI, CIA, other agenciesMilitary Leaders and Troops (by name) - and their familiesWe spread these topics out among the 5 lists and list specific people under each topic:Missionaries (divided into 5 regions of the world - separate list each day)Those who need salvationThose who need healingThose whose marriages need mendingWayward children and young adultsSingle momsFor the Heart to Heart Newsletter:For my wisdom and guidance in putting it togetherEncouragement and blessing for the ladies who receive itFor each H2H lady and her family to love, serve and glorify the Lord in their livesThere have been so many blessings and answers to prayer (ATP's, as I like to call them) through the years! Praying together has made us so much more aware of the needs of others and seeing God's hand in their lives has been amazing to experience. I wonder what ATP's the Lord has in store for us all this year! It can be relaxing and you get a back rub to boot!

How is it possible to make more time together when the days are shorter during the winter? Use these ideas to come up with more creative ways to spend the time you already have:
Bath Time
* Read a story to your little one while they soak in the tub.
* Place different objects into the bathtub and try to guess which ones will float and which ones will sink to the bottom.
* Make a bubble bath and decorate your child with the bubbles: bubble head; bubble beard; bubble mustache, etc.
* Once their hair is lathered with shampoo, style it into crazy shapes and let them look into a mirror to see their new hairdo.
Traffic Jams
* Play Life Guessing. Take a look at people in cars next to you. What do you think they do for a living? Where are they going? Are they famous? What kind of story would someone else make up about you?
* Interview each other! When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? Why? When you are a grown up, what kinds of things will you do that you can't do now?
Dinner Time
* Cook together.
They can cut out the ingredients from the paper and put them into an envelope until it's time to go shopping.

WHEN KIDS ARE SELF-CENTERED

We will share Scripture, prayers and support. We will seek to support our husbands in prayer, and win them to the Lord as directed in 1Peter3. This is not a list to complain or put down our husbands, but to be understanding and supportive of the varied prayer needs that Christian wives of unsaved husbands have. Our main goal, to encourage prayer by each wife, for her husband, and to pray for each other.
HEALTHY GRANOLA CEREAL
Recipe from my mother, Dorothy Walker - in her memory - with the Lord for almost 21 years
Preheat oven to 225 degrees.
6 cups old fashioned rolled oats, uncooked
3 cups dry coconut, shredded and unsweetened (can find unsweetened at health food store)
1 cup each of raw wheat germ, honey, olive or canola oil, slivered almonds or walnuts, raisins, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and cold water
In a large mixing bowl, combine oats, coconut, wheat germ, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds. Toss together thoroughly. Combine honey and oil. Add to dry ingredients, stirring until well mixed. Add the cold water, a little at a time, mixing until crumbly. Pour mixture into a lightly oiled large shallow baking pan. Place on middle rack and bake in a preheated oven for two hours, stirring every 15 minutes. Add one cup of nuts and continue to bake for ½ hour longer or until mixture is thoroughly dry and light brown in color and crispy. Turn off oven and allow cereal to cool in oven. Add dried raisins or cranberries at this point. Cool and store in cool, dry place or freeze. Serve with fresh fruit, with milk or just plain.
4 eggs 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups cooking oil 3/4 can frozen unsweetened
3 tsp. cinnamon apple juice (concentrate, thawed)
1 tsp. salt 1 cup raisins
Beat eggs and add oil. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to egg & oil mixture. Add vanilla and juice. Stir in carrots, raisins and 1/2 cup nuts. Pour batter into greased cake pan and sprinkle 1/2 cup nuts on top. Bake in preheated oven for 325 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
You can use this dough for dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, dumplings, hot pockets, pizza crust, pretzels, doughnuts, bagels, and other variations.
1 1/2 cups warm water - (105-115 F) 2 eggs
2/3 cup sugar 1 cup lukewarm mashed potatoes
1 1/2 teaspoons salt 7-7 1/2 cups flour (half unbleached / half whole wheat)
1. Disslove yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar, salt, shortening, eggs, potatoes and 4 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle.
Keep covered.)
Cinnamon Rolls - roll dough out in large rectangle, spread with butter, add cinnamon and sugar.
Soft Pretzels - shape, let rise, boil in water with 1/2 tsp baking soda added. Shape, brush with butter, sprinkle with Kosher salt, bake.
Pizza Crust - grease pizza pan, roll out, let rise. Add sauce, cheese and toppings. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

One caller to our answering service gave me his name, number and message and then said, "You know my name. What's yours?"
"We're not allowed to give our names," I replied, "but my operator number is 4136."
Sounding disappointed, he said, "May I call you by your first digit, or would that be too personal?" - Cited on http://www.ArcaMax.com
