October is National Popcorn Month -- Pop up a batch or two!!
October is National Popcorn Month because popcorn is harvested each fall in the Midwest USA. This all-time favorite snack is cheap, easy to make, and most people like it -- the perfect treat! Try some of our favorite popcorn recipes:
1. Pink Elephant Popcorn -- Very pretty pink! Strawberry is our favorite flavor!
3 tablespoons butter, 1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows, 4 tablespoons dry strawberry flavored gelatin, 2 quarts popped popcorn
Melt butter over low heat. Stir in marshmallows until they are soft, but not melted. Add flavored gelatin mix. Stir until everything is a nice pink color throughout. The gelatin may not dissolve completely, but that's ok. Pour evenly over popcorn and stir until popcorn is evenly coated. Cool. Enjoy!
2. Kettle Korn - A true classic!
1/4 cup oil, 1/2 cup popcorn, 1/4 cup sugar
Heat oil in popper (or large soup pot). Add popcorn and sugar. Pop as usual. Remove immediately to avoid burning. If you use white sugar, it will taste like popcorn balls. If you use brown sugar, it will taste like caramel corn. To add color: add a few drops of food coloring on the unmelted sugar when ingredients are put in popper. Dot drops around in 6 or 8 places. Don't squirt in one spot or it will lump!3. Crispy Popcorn Snack - Savory and delicious!
3 quarts popped corn, 1/4 cup butter - melted, 1/2 small can French fried onions, 1/4 cup bacon bits, salt to taste
Toss popped corn with melted butter. Stir in French fried onions and bacon bits. Sprinkle with salt. Place on jellyroll pan or baking sheet. Heat oven to 250°F. Bake for 5 minutes; serve hot.
4. Pizza Popcorn
3 quarts popped corn, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons dry spaghetti sauce mix, 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Place popcorn in a large bowl. Warm olive oil in microwave. Drizzle over popcorn; sprinkle with dry spaghetti sauce powder and Parmesan cheese; toss to coat popcorn.
5. Sugar and Spice Popcorn -- Addicting!
1 tablespoon butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 2 quarts popped corn
Melt butter over low heat. Add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Drizzle over popcorn and toss to mix well. Other spices can be substituted: allspice, anise, cloves, ginger, mint or even pumpkin pie spice._________________________________________________________________

Change a child and change our world!" – Mary Rice Hopkins, singer, songwriter and speaker in California www.maryricehopkins.comTIME ENJOYED WITH MY GRANDSONLast weekend our almost 19 month old grandson and I took a walk with a basket to gather pretty colorful leaves, holly berries, a yellow chrysanthemum and a purple rhododendron blooming out of season - all kept of out his mouth, of course. We stuck the treasures on clear contact paper, with another piece on top. It looked like colorful stained glass art work hanging in the window! My daughter said she plans to hang it in Justin's bedroom for him to remember his time with his grammy. 🙂 He also learned to string Cheerios!Justin's grandpa and I need to sort through about sixty digital pictures of Justin that I snapped as he played on Saturday afternoon. Although he is a very fun-loving little guy with lots of smiles and laughter, he looks quite serious on most of these pictures as he concentrated so hard while he played with a 33 year old Fischer Price record player and five records. Our daughter could still remember which songs were on the different colored records, from when she was a little girl!As we listened to children's music all afternoon, including Mary Rice Hopkins' music, which Justin especially loved (www.maryricehopkins.com), I made the playdoh recipe from the Heart to Heart Welcome Letter, as Justin watched and we talked about the color, blue. Then he sat in his highchair and played with it for over an hour, while I played with him! He loved it and was so fascinated with pushing various kitchen tools and his fingers into the soft dough! After he watched Grammy push some playdoh through a garlic press a few times, mesmerized by the "little blue squirmy worms," he mastered the garlic press himself! Sticking his tongue out the corner of his mouth helped to step up his concentration! So cute! When our daughter's family visits next month, I will need to have all those playdoh toys from our three children ready for Justin - the Fuzzy Pumper, Dr. Drill N' Fill with tooth molds, cookie cutters, beads, etc. That's right - I saved almost all of our three children's nicer toys and books - for the grandchildren to use someday, and be passed along to each one. Those years of storing all these toys and books has finally paid off! You probably realize that it now costs more to amuse a child than it once did to educate his parents! So if your children who are now parents don't think they must have all new toys for their own children, this is a way to help them save money and reminisce about when they were little kids. All afternoon the music played! Justin was on the floor playing when a particular song got his attention - "I've Got the Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy! Down in My Heart!" He perked up, looked at the stereo, gave me a questioning look, dropped his toy and walked quickly to the living room to check the front door! His mommy's name is "Joy!" On this visit again I sang, "Jesus Loves Me" as Justin joined in singing, "Je Je" with me as he did last month! What a treasure grandchildren are! I think I can hear a loud "Amen" from all of you "Heart to Heart" grandmas! Some of the activities in the following article might be appropriate for a small playgroup as well as with your own children or grandchildren at home. I thought the projects with an asterisk might be suitable to do with a child as young as 18 months. Of course, heavy adult supervision is essential. A Cheerios necklace (without dye) could be a variation of the macaroni necklace, and could also be eaten! Next month I hope to help Justin make a Cherrios necklace to snack on during his long drive home. ~ LoisCREATIVE NATURE CRAFTS FOR KIDSBy Christy Camburn © 2003 Child Care Finders ~ Used by permissionHere are some creative arts and crafts ideas to do with young children ages 2 to 8. By Deborah Shelton ~ Used by permission
I love month-long holidays because you have at least 28 days to celebrate -- 31 in October's case. Have a fun-filled October!
National Car Care Month
* Grab a rag and a bucket of soapy water and wash the car together as a family!
* Make a felt air freshener to hang from the rearview mirror. Cut a flower, tree, or other shape from a piece of felt. Sprinkle the felt with a few drops of essential oil (vanilla, cinnamon, peppermint, etc.). Use a single-hole punch to make a hole near the top, and thread a piece of yarn through the hole for hanging.
National Dessert Month
* Visit a favorite restaurant and order only desserts! Order a few and share them as a family.
* Create your own unique dessert. How about caramel and chocolate covered bananas sprinkled with gummy bears? The possibilities are endless!
* Host a pie-eating contest…why not?
National Pizza Month
* Invite friends over for a pizza-making-and-eating party!
* Try new and different toppings. Stop playing it safe with pepperoni...try pineapple instead!
* Make miniature pizzas: Slice mini bagels in half and sprinkle shredded cheese and other toppings on top, and then bake.
Family History Awareness Month
* Visit a genealogy library to trace your family tree, or surf the Internet to find your family's seal or coat of arms. Frame your find.
* Show off your family tree by creating a photo wall display. Frame individual pictures or design a huge photo collage.
* Interview your family members and record your findings in a notebook. For a visual remembrance, videotape your interviews and make copies to hand out at big family gatherings.

Add the salt, egg, oil and syrup and stir well. Stir in the flour a couple of cups at a time, mixing well. I use a wooden spoon. Keep adding the flour and mixing until you get a dough that is elastic. Knead for a good 20 minutes. You can use your bread maker to do all the mixing and kneading for you! Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 3-4 hours. Grease cookie sheets and put a little bit of oil on your hands. Spread out dough on the cookie sheets. Put on your toppings. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.Additional Notes on Pizza from Lois: Use this recipe for large or individual pizza crusts - even personal pan pizzas. Since this is a large recipe, make some pizza crusts to freeze to use later. When I freeze pizza crust, I partially bake and cool it first. Some suggestions for toppings are sauce (pizza or spaghetti), raw or canned mushrooms, sliced black olives, chopped green chilies, peppers (green, red or yellow), thinly sliced onions, thinly sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced zucchini, pepperoni, sausage, hamburger and/or grated cheese. And if you've never tried pineapple (crushed, sliced or tidbits), you've got to try it! Delicious! "We must equip our teachers with important tools to lead the next generation. Change a child and change our world!" – Mary Rice Hopkins, singer, songwriter and speaker in California http://www.maryricehopkins.com
TIME ENJOYED WITH MY GRANDSON
Last weekend our almost 19 month old grandson and I took a walk with a basket to gather pretty colorful leaves, holly berries, a yellow chrysanthemum and a purple rhododendron blooming out of season - all kept of out his mouth, of course. We stuck the treasures on clear contact paper, with another piece on top. It looked like colorful stained glass art work hanging in the window! My daughter said she plans to hang it in Justin's bedroom for him to remember his time with his grammy. 🙂 He also learned to string Cheerios!
Justin's grandpa and I need to sort through about sixty digital pictures of Justin that I snapped as he played on Saturday afternoon. Although he is a very fun-loving little guy with lots of smiles and laughter, he looks quite serious on most of these pictures as he concentrated so hard while he played with a 33 year old Fischer Price record player and five records. Our daughter could still remember which songs were on the different colored records, from when she was a little girl!
As we listened to children's music all afternoon, including Mary Rice Hopkins' music, which Justin especially loved (http://www.maryricehopkins.com), I made the playdoh recipe from the Heart to Heart Welcome Letter, as Justin watched and we talked about the color, blue.
~ Lois

OCTOBER FAMILY FUN
* Host a pie-eating contest…why not?

PIZZA CRUST RECIPE
Contributed by Debbie Klinect of Florida ~ Adapted from a cookbook from her mother-in-law
2 packages of yeast 1/2 cup maple syrup
3 cups hot water 1 Tbsp. salt
1 egg, beaten 8+ cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup oil
In a large bowl, dissolve the packages of yeast in the hot water. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
Additional Notes on Pizza from Lois: Use this recipe for large or individual pizza crusts - even personal pan pizzas. Delicious! My sister-in-law, June Walker, introduced me to this many years ago on a visit in Washington state!
NEW GRANDPARENTS IN CALIFORNIA!
Congratulations to Don and Linda Klein as they joyfully became grandparents on October 13, 2004! Their first grandchild is Ella Margaret Klein, the daughter of Jason and Megan Klein, all living in California. She goes by the sweet name of "Ellie," meaning "light of the sun."
A MERRY HEART DOETH GOOD LIKE MEDICINE!
Sunday School teacher: "Johnny, if you're a good little boy, you'll go to heaven and have a crown of gold on your head."
Johnny: "Not me, I had one of those things put on a tooth once!"
Johnny: "Not me, I had one of those things put on a tooth once!"
(Note: Be sure your children know that "being good" will not get them (or anyone) to heaven. Ephesians 2: 8-9 says, "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast.)
A little boy ran into the living room shouting, "Hey Mom! We got a toad and we bashed him and we squished him, and then he got caught in the lawn mower until..." the lad paused and noticed for the first time that the minister was sitting on the other side of the room sipping tea.
"Until," he continued, "God called him home."
"Until," he continued, "God called him home."
A teacher was finishing up a lesson on the joys of discovery and the importance of curiosity. "Where would we be today," she asked, "if no one had ever been curious?"
One child quietly spoke up from the back of the room. "In the garden of Eden?"
There was a man in Pennsylvania who had to go to Alabama for a business trip. That night he planned to e-mail his wife to let her know he had arrived safely. His wife, Jennifer Johnson's, e-mail address was [email protected]. He hit one wrong letter and his message went to Jean Johnson in NY. Her e-mail address was [email protected]. Her pastor-husband had just died and that very day she buried him. That evening she got an e-mail which read, "Arrived safely, but it's much hotter here than I expected!"
If you tell some girls their hair looks like a mop, they don't mind. They don't know what a mop is.
Little Freddy's dog was killed by a car and he mourned for days and days. "Oh come now, Freddy," said his father. "You didn't carry on like this when Grandma died."
"Yeah," cried Freddy, "But I didn't raise Grandma from a pup."
A terrible tragedy on Highway 52. A tree surgeon ran into a tree and nearly fainted when he learned it was one of his patients.

A man never gets too busy to attend his own funeral.
I just invented a convertible hearse. Before they lower you down you get a little tan.
I remember my wife tried to bake a birthday cake, but the candles melted in the oven.
Anybody who can still do at sixty what he was doing at twenty, probably wasn't doing much at twenty.
Keep your eye on the ball, your shoulder to the wheel, and your ear to the ground...now try to work in that position!
I'm one of those people who believe that movies would be much better if they shot fewer films and more actors.
An old timer is one who can remember when a baby-sitter was called, "Mother."
If you really look like your passport photo, chances are you're not well enough to travel.
To prevent a head cold from going to your chest, just tie a knot in your neck.
