author unknown ~~ submitted by Alice Meyer of VirginiaSince many of us have seen "The Passion of the Christ," by Mel Gibson, this description of the crucifixion will have even more meaning, as we are better able to visualize the suffering of Jesus Christ for each one us individually. ~ LoisThe cross is placed on the ground and the exhausted man is quickly thrown backwards with his shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist.
He drives a heavy, square wrought-iron nail through the wrist deep into the wood. Quickly he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flex and movement. The cross is then lifted into place. The left foot is pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees flexed. The victim is now crucified.
As he slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating, fiery pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain - the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves. As he pushes himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, he places the full weight on the nail through his feet. Again he feels the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the bones of his feet. As the arms fatigue, cramps sweep through his muscles, knotting them into deep relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push himself upward to breathe. Air can be drawn into the lungs but not exhaled. He fights to raise himself in order to get even one small breath. Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream, and the cramps partially subside.Spasmodically, he is able to push himself upward to exhale and bring in life-giving oxygen. Hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-renting cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from his lacerated back as he moves up and down against rough timber. Then another agony begins: a deep, crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart. It is now almost over -- the loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level-- the compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood into the tissues-- the tortured lungs are making frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. He can feel the chill of death creeping through his tissues. Finally, he can allow his body to die.
All this the Bible records with the simple words, "and they crucified Him" (Mark 15:24). What wondrous love is this? Many people don't know the pain and suffering our Lord, Jesus Christ went through for us. Because of the brutality, crucifixion was given a sentence to only its worst offenders of the law.
Thieves, murderers, and rapists would be the types of creeps who got crucified. Yet, here Jesus is being crucified between two hardened criminals...
What did Jesus do? Did he murder anyone? Did he steal anything? The answer, as we all know, is NO!! Jesus did nothing to deserve this type of death, yet he went willing to die, in between two thieves, so that we might be saved. And there, between the sinners, our Savior was slain for our sins.
Romans 10:9 "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

THE PARADOXES OF CHRIST
author unknown ~~ submitted by Barb Campbell of Mississippi
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Grove/6932/paradox.html
He was the Light, yet He hung in darkness on the Cross.
He was the Life, yet He poured out His soul unto death.
He was the Rock of Ages, yet His feet sank into the deep waters.
He was the Son of God, yet He died a felon's death.
He was holy, undefiled, separated from sinners and knew no sin,
Yet He was made sin when He took the guilty culprit's place and suffered in his stead.
He bade the weary to come to Him for rest,
Yet not on earth could He find rest until He said, "It is finished," and gave up His life to God.
He was the Mighty God,
Yet He became a man and was crucified through weakness.
He was the Image of the Invisible God,
Yet His visage was marred more than any man.
All the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily in Him,
Yet He took on Him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men.
He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast;
Yet He humbled Himself and became obedient - even unto death.
He was the Desire of All Nations,
Yet He was despised and rejected of man.
He is the Fountain of Life, yet upon the cross He cried, "I thirst."
Can you understand these mysteries?
These are the things that angels desire to look into.
The heavens cannot contain Him, yet He died for us.
CREATIVE EASTER BASKET IDEAS ~~ ALTERNATIVES TO CANDY
by Margie DeMonbrun of Missouri
Note from Lois: Great ideas from a wonderful grandma!
I need to go out poking around and find some things for my grand kids' Easter baskets. Their mother does not like candy, but prefers only one or two candy items. Last year they all three got new hats; Chris, a sports hat with sunglasses attached; Kelsey, a white Sunday straw hat with ribbons and bow; and Olivia, a darling white baby bonnet. The girls also got gloves and pretty anklets with lace; Chris got some socks he'd been wanting and a zippered coin holder.
Rather than loading up Easter baskets with sugary snacks, you may want to put an emphasis on a chocolate candy cross or a peanut butter egg, new Christian CD's for the older ones, a Veggie Tale for the younger ones or Steve Green Scripture Songs on tape or CD's. Other ideas without sugar are a miniature Easter tea set, a good book, art supplies (there are so many neat things anymore from stickers to sprinkles, colored pens and pencils, rubber stamps, ink, erasers that glow in the dark, gel pens, crafts), Legos, colored light bulbs for lamps in their rooms (green, purple or dark rose...get them at Wal-Mart), sippy straws ( with a soccer ball that bounces around when you sip or a baseball (also Wal-Mart finds), hair bows and accessories.
I personally think the kids LOVE this kind of basket. Putting in a couple of colored plastic Easter eggs - one or two with some quarters and one with a dollar or two -- those ALWAYS bring gasps of delight!!! Usually, by the time I get done with it, I've spent quite a bit on this Easter basket thing; but Jerry (husband) and I prefer to put some money into worthwhile, character building items than into all candy. They are only children once.....toyland becomes a thing of the past all too fast. We ALWAYS, however, make SURE the children understand what the real meaning of Easter is....just as we do at Christmas time. The children help Papa (Grandpa) read little poems, verses, etc. on the holiday - it helps center our attention on the reason of the season and gives the children something constructive and educational to do....plus they learn more about Jesus. And we are instructed to teach the children (Deut. 6) when and wherever we are in life....step by step, precept upon precept.
RESURRECTION RECIPES
Note from Lois: Last week you received the recipe for Easter Story Cookies. As we celebrate the RESURRECTION of our Lord, here are more recipes that would be perfect for your Easter dinner. They will make a lasting impression on your children, as well as the adults! Why not let your children or grandchildren help you make them, as you celebrate Christ's resurrection!RESURRECTION ROLLS
Crescent Roll Dough - Melted butter - Large marshmallows - Cinnamon & Sugar Mixture
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.*Give each child a triangle of crescent rolls. The crescent roll represents the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in.
*Give each child a marshmallow, this represents Jesus.
*Have him dip the marshmallow in melted butter, which represents the oils of embalming.
*Dip the buttered marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar which represents the spices used to anoint the body.
*Wrap up the coated marshmallow tightly in the crescent roll (not like a typical crescent roll up...but bring the sides up and seal the marshmallow inside. This represents the wrapping of Jesus' body after death.
*Place in a 350 degree oven for 10 - 12 minutes (The oven represents the tomb--pretend like it was three days!)
*When the rolls have cooled slightly, the children can open their rolls (cloth) and discover that Jesus is no longer there, HE IS RISEN! (The marshmallow melts and the crescent roll is puffed up, but empty). With Easter coming soon, take this opportunity to make these cookies with your children---young and old. It will be a wonderful object lesson of Jesus Christ's death, burial and resurrection!
Pass this recipe on to teenagers who may baby-sit. A babysitter could ask if the parents for whom she sits would allow her to make these cookies for the children. This would be a great witnessing opportunity.
KRISPY PEANUT BUTTER EGGS OR CROSSES
by Lois Breneman
2 cups crunchy peanut butter 4 cups Rice Krispies
2 cup confectioner's sugar 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup melted butter 4 oz. paraffinMix first 3 ingredients well. You will need greased (buttered) hands to mix in the Rice Krispies. Shape into eggs or crosses. Place on a waxed paper-lined tray and refrigerate several hours or overnight. Melt 12 oz. chocolate chips with 4 oz. paraffin in double boiler. Dip eggs or crosses into chocolate and allow to harden on waxed paper. Use firm frosting in a cake decorator to form at least three pink, blue, yellow, orange or purple flowers on each egg or cross, and a few green leaves. Another great idea is to draw a cross with the cake decorator on an egg and leave it plain or pipe some flowers inside the cross at the center. Let set an hour or more. Slip carefully into a cellophane corsage bag and tie with a matching ribbon to present family members and friends. They'll love it!
RESURRECTION CAKE
We made this Resurrection Cake one Easter. Grease and flour a 2 quart oven safe measuring bowl and bake a regular cake mix in it. I used the glass Pampered Chef mixing bowl. After cooling the cake and inverting it onto a plate, frost it with chocolate frosting all over. On one side scoop a hole out to represent the empty tomb of Jesus. A round cookie can be the rolled away stone. On top of the cake make 3 crosses with pretzels glued with royal icing, some green tinted coconut for grass, and use colored frosting on the side above the "tomb" to write, "He is Risen!"RESURRECTION EGGS
submitted by Barb Campbell of MississippiWhat a terrific way to share the Easter story of Jesus' resurrection with your children. You will need 1 dozen plastic Easter eggs, an egg carton, construction paper to decorate the top of the carton and the items listed below. You can click on each item to see a picture of it. You can also print out this page and then just cut out the individual messages/scripture. Each egg is to contain the item along with the paper describing the verse. For example the first egg will have a piece of bread and the #1 verse that you see below. When you are all done filling the eggs you can decorate a piece of construction paper (pre measure it against the lid of the egg carton) and glue it to the cover. Please Note: Adult supervision is necessary for little ones, due to small or sharp items.
BREAD ~ COIN ~ PURPLE CLOTH ~ THORN ~ SCOURGE OR THICK STRING ~ CROSS ~ NAIL ~ SIGN ~ SPONGE ~ SPEAR ~ ROCK

MANTLE DECORATIONSBy Lois Breneman ~ from April, 2000My son, Jeff, gave me a crown of thorns that could be very much like the one that was pressed on Jesus head, as he was paying the debt for our sins. One day as I was walking on the treadmill, I gazed for a long time at that crown of thorns on a small table in the room and thought about Jesus dying in my place. It so gripped my heart that it wasn't long before the tears were flowing. That visual aid was so powerful in that moment of quiet meditation. This year I used that crown of thorns in a mantle decoration in the family room. My husband sawed and nailed together a three foot rugged looking wooden cross for me, and that is in the center of the mantle, with a purple cloth draped on the one side, and the crown of thorns hanging on the other side. There are other reminders of Jesus' great suffering and sacrifice for us. I have praying hands that my daughter made in Bible school when she was seven years old hanging on one side of the cross, representing Jesus and the disciples praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Hearts hang on the other side of the cross. Red jewels are glued to an invisible thread on either side of the cross, representing Jesus' drops of blood. There is a tomb cut out of construction paper with rocks drawn on, a door cut out, and an actual round garden rock to the side with a ceramic angel (from a nativity scene) standing there. I fastened a small sponge to a stick (without the vinegar on the end) and placed it on the mantle with thirty pieces of silver (quarters, nickels and dimes), a silver cup, several bunches of grapes arranged with a white basket of purple flowers, mauve tulle and pink lilies. The purple flowers help tie it all together with the purple robe draped on the cross. It sounds like it may be a cluttered mess when you hear of all these items, but it really is not if you balance the items and colors. Just move them around until it looks right to you, if you try this decoration. The cross, purple robe and crown of thorns are the focal point. You may also want to write an appropriate scripture verse for your mantle, if there is room.We have never taught our children about the "Easter Bunny," but I do think that rabbits, chicks, eggs and other "spring decorations" are appropriate to use in decorating our homes, as we celebrate new life during this season of new beginnings. God certainly gave them to us to enjoy. I love rabbits and our sons have raised many of them when they were young! But with all the "Easter Bunny" talk around us, it is a good idea to explain to small children that we display bunnies and rabbits because God gave them to us to enjoy and springtime is when they are hopping - especially in our gardens! However, let's remember the real meaning of Easter and make an effort to emphasize that aspect in our decorations. A visible display of reminders of Jesus' payment for our sins will have an impact on us, our children and visitors to our home, as we are remember what He went through when He took our place!March, 2002 ~~ This year I decided to display the cross on our front porch, with a purple cloth draped over it, along with the crown of thorns, which is attached with invisible fishing line.
EASTER TREE
Several years ago a friend mentioned using tree branches to decorate for Easter. Thinking of the mantle decorations (above) to emphasize the true meaning of Easter, we came up with a list of Easter symbols that could be hung or arranged beneath it. Children would enjoy helping to put this together with you. This is a comprehensive tool for discussing the biblical Easter message! ~ LoisFind several small tree branches and stick them into a large flower pot and fill with stones to hold them in place. Decorate branches with the following items from the Easter story in the Bible. Read the story to your children and have them hang the ornaments on the tree, as you come to that part of the story. Use the references in the segment above on Resurrection Eggs. *Cross *Nail *Coins in a tiny drawstring bag--30 pieces of silver *Small reed or tick with small piece of sponge on end--for vinegar *Stone or felt tomb with stone to roll away *Rooster *Tiny loaf of bread, shellacked *Cup--for communion cup *Stone split in two, representing an earthquake *Bunch of grapes--for grape juice or wine *Red cloth---for the robe mentioned in Matthew *Purple cloth for the robe that Jesus wore *Praying hands---for Jesus & disciples praying *Crown of thorns *Sword *Scourge--small piece of rope or heavy string *Palm branches *White linen cloth--for grave clothes *Pilot's water basin *Rope tied into a noose--Judas hung himself *Angel--who rolled back the stone *Red jewels in the shape of tear drops, glued back to an invisible thread--about 6 jewels or so to make 6 drops of blood.THREE TREES
author unknown ~ Contributed by Annamarie Kresge of VirginiaOnce there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, "Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty."Then the second tree said, "Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull."Finally the third tree said, "I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me."After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, "This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter,"and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest. At the second tree the woodsman said, "This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard." The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, "I don't need anything special from my tree, I'll take this one," and he cut it down.
When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for.
The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end.
The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and He stood and said "Peace" and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.THE JELLY BEAN PRAYER
RED is for the blood He gave. GREEN is for the grass he made.
YELLOW is for the sun so bright. ORANGE is for the edge of night.
BLACK is for the sins we made. WHITE is for the grace He gave.
PURPLE is for His hour of sorrow. PINK is for our new tomorrow.
A bag full of jelly beans, Colorful and sweet,
Is a Prayer, is a Promise, is a Special Treat.
HOW TO JUMP-START BLOSSOMS
Enjoy early blossoms from fruit trees, forsythia and spring flowers by jump-starting them even before they bloom outdoors! Use pruning shears to cut ends of branches from trees after buds appear and are about ready to pop. Try cutting branches of lilacs, azaleas, dogwood, redbud, plum, crab apple, pear, apple, peach or whatever is budding and about to bloom in your backyard. If these blossoms are already blooming in your area, make a note to include on your calendar for next year.
NATURAL EASTER EGG DYES
submitted by Alice Meyer of Virginia
Make natural dyes for Easter eggs from materials in the kitchen.
Red cabbage leaves produce a robin's egg blue color.
Orange peels create a tender yellow. Carrot tops yield a smoky yellow green.
Yellow Delicious apple peelings create pale lavender flecked with soft rust.
Brown (not white) onion peels dye orange.
Fresh spinach gives you a pinkish color with gray-green buffs. To dye eggs, place in a pan and cover with water. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and dye material. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer gently 20 minutes.
The color will deepen or change if the eggs are left in the dye solution overnight.
Note from Lois: For brighter colors -- blueberries, red beets, cranberries.
AN EASTER EGG HUNT ALTERNATIVEEaster Tip from Diane Ulmer of VirginiaMy kids have always enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt. However, they do not need the candy in the eggs and they are getting older. Last year I had them write amounts of 5, 10, 15 and 25 cents on slips of paper, which they put in the eggs before we hid them. Then we went to the Dollar Store with their money. They are asking to do the same thing again this year.PASTEL M&M'S ~ FAVORS FOR UPCOMING WEDDINGS, SHOWERS OR DINNERSBy Lois BrenemanThe pastel M&M plain candies make a lovely favor, in a small lace bag and tied with a narrow ribbon. Stock up on the pastel M&M's after Easter, when the prices are cut! Find lace by the yard in the wedding or shower color or use white lace and tie with a narrow ribbon in the matching color. Cut 4" X 5" pieces of lace fabric (if you use a finished edge for the top, no hemming is needed); fold the 5" in half to form a 2 1/2" width and sew a 1/4" seam down the one side and at the bottom. Turn; fill with 12 - 20 candies and tie with a ribbon. Note: Other sheer fabrics can be used as well, but will need a rolled hem or serging at the top edge. We made these favors in teal lace with white ribbons for our daughter's wedding and everyone enjoyed them, so this idea has been tested. ~ LoisDON'T FORGET! TURN YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD ONE HOUR THIS WEEKEND!And get to bed earlier so you are able to get to Sunday school and church on time.Have a Blessed and Happy Easter!Your "Heart to Heart" friend,Lois

Why not let your children or grandchildren help you make them, as you celebrate Christ's resurrection!
RESURRECTION ROLLS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
1/4 cup melted butter 4 oz. paraffin
On top of the cake make 3 crosses with pretzels glued with royal icing, some green tinted coconut for grass, and use colored frosting on the side above the "tomb" to write, "He is Risen!"

MANTLE DECORATIONS
~ Lois
