THE EMPTY EGG
Author unknown - Thanks to Joan Martin in Pennsylvania for sending this moving story!
Jeremy was born with a twisted body and a slow mind. At the age of 12 he was still in second grade, seemingly unable to learn. His teacher, Doris Miller, often became exasperated with him. He would squirm in his seat, drool, and make grunting noises. At other times, he spoke clearly and distinctly, as if a spot of light had penetrated the darkness of his brain. Most of the time, however, Jeremy just irritated his teacher.
One day she called his parents and asked them to come in for a consultation. As the Forresters entered the empty classroom, Doris said to them, "Jeremy really belongs in a special school. It isn't fair to him to be with younger children who don't have learning problems. Why, there is a five year gap between his age and that of the other students."
Mrs. Forrester cried softly into a tissue, while her husband spoke. "Miss Miller," he said, "there is no school of that kind nearby. It would be a terrible shock for Jeremy if we had to take him out of this school. We know he really likes it here." Doris sat for a long time after they had left, staring at the snow outside the window. Its coldness seemed to seep into her soul. She wanted to sympathize with the Forresters. After all, their only child had a terminal illness. But it wasn't fair to keep him in her class. She had 18 other youngsters to teach, and Jeremy was a distraction. Furthermore, he would never learn to read and write. Why waste any more time trying?
As she pondered the situation, guilt washed over her. Here I am complaining when my problems are nothing compared to that poor family, she thought. Lord, please help me to be more patient with Jeremy. From that day on, she tried hard to ignore Jeremy's noises and his blank stares. Then one day, he limped to her desk, dragging his bad leg behind him.
"I love you, Miss Miller," he exclaimed, loud enough for the whole class to hear. The other students snickered, and Doris' face turned red. She stammered, "Wh-why that's very nice, Jeremy. N-now please take your seat."
Spring came, and the children talked excitedly about the coming of Easter. Doris told them the story of Jesus, and then to emphasize the idea of new life springing forth, she gave each of the children a large plastic egg. "Now," she said to them, "I want you to take this home and bring it back tomorrow with something inside that shows new life. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Miss Miller," the children responded enthusiastically-all except for Jeremy. He listened intently; his eyes never left her face. He did not even make his usual noises. Had he understood what she had said about Jesus' death and resurrection? Did he understand the assignment? Perhaps she should call his parents and explain the project to them.
That evening, Doris' kitchen sink stopped up. She called the landlord and waited an hour for him to come by and unclog it. After that, she still had to shop for groceries, iron a blouse, and prepare a vocabulary test for the next day. She completely forgot about phoning Jeremy's parents.
The next morning, 19 children came to school, laughing and talking as they placed their eggs in the large wicker basket on Miss Miller's desk. After they completed their math lesson, it was time to open the eggs. In the first egg, Doris found a flower. "Oh yes, a flower is certainly a sign of new life," she said. "When plants peek through the ground, we know that spring is here." A small girl in the first row waved her arm. "That's my egg, Miss Miller," she called out. The next egg contained a plastic butterfly, which looked very real. Doris held it up. "We all know that a caterpillar changes and grows into a beautiful butterfly. Yes, that's new life, too." Little Judy smiled proudly and said, "Miss Miller, that one is mine." Next, Doris found a rock with moss on it. She explained that moss, too, showed life. Billy spoke up from the back of the classroom, "My daddy helped me," he beamed.
Then Doris opened the fourth egg. She gasped. The egg was empty. Surely it must be Jeremy's she thought, and of course, he did not understand her instructions. If only she had not forgotten to phone his parents. Because she did not want to embarrass him, she quietly set the egg aside and reached for another. Suddenly, Jeremy spoke up. "Miss Miller, aren't you going to talk about my egg?" Flustered, Doris replied, "But Jeremy, your egg is empty." He looked into her eyes and said softly, "Yes, but Jesus' tomb was empty, too."
Time stopped. When she could speak again, Doris asked him, "Do you know why the tomb was empty?" "Oh, yes," Jeremy said, "Jesus was killed and put in there. Then His Father raised Him up."
The recess bell rang. While the children excitedly ran out to the school yard, Doris cried. The cold inside her melted completely away.
Three months later, Jeremy died. Those who paid their respects at the mortuary were surprised to see 19 eggs on top of his casket, all of them empty.

WD-40 - ITS BACKGROUND AND MANY USES
Author unknown ~ Thanks to Ruth Ann Assaid in Virginia for sending this useful information!
Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the Main ingredient of WD-40 is?
I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do - probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open.
Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck.
I'm impressed! WD-40 who knew? 'Water Displacement #40' The product began from a search for rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.
Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.
When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top .... Voila! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.
Here are some other uses:
1. Protects silver from tarnishing.
2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.
5. Keeps flies off cows.
6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7. Removes lipstick stains.
8. Loosens stubborn zippers.
9. Untangles jewelry chains.
10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.
17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fastslide.
21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.
22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.
28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.
29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31. Removes splattered grease on stove.
32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
37. Florida 's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.
38. The favorite use in the state of New York, WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.
40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.
42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!
43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.
P. S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL!

I want to thank you for the Reassurance prayer/poem in this newsletter (shown below from 2/4/10). I definitely needed this as both of our older sons joined the Army and have moved in opposite directions of home far far away. They both left, taking their families with them of course (meaning 5 of the grandkids too) -- in the same week. But it has been tough on this ole mom to have them far away and no longer in the same town with us. This prayer/poem is just what I needed, even if they are no longer children but grown men of 30 and 29.
Thank you for your wonderful newsletters. I look forward to reading them each week. They are uplifting and encouraging. I share many thoughts, ideas, poems, from them with family and friends and have encouraged them to sign up for their own copies. Thanks for all you do 🙂
REASSURANCE
by Betty Banner, Jackson, Tennessee - (This is the section Vickie was referring to above.)
Dear Lord,
Could you spare some guardian angels to give me peace of mind
As my children wander from me and stretch the ties that bind?
You have heavenly legions, Father. Could You send me just a few
To guide my eager youngsters as I give them, Lord, to You?
Oh thank You, thank You, Father, and, oh, my glad heart sings.
I'm certain that just now I heard the swish of passing wings!
GRANDMA'S OFF HER ROCKER
Author unknown
In the dim and distant past,
When life's tempo wasn't fast,
Grandma used to rock and knit,
Crochet, tat, and babysit.
When we were in a jam,
We could always count on Gram.
In the age of gracious living,
Grandma's life was one of giving.
Now Grandma's at the gym,
Exercising to keep slim,
She's off touring with the bunch,
Or taking all her friends to lunch.
Driving north to fish or hike,
Taking time to ride her bike.
Nothing seems to block or stop her,
Now that Grandma's off her rocker.
ENCOURAGEMENT FOR WOMEN
by Lois Breneman - Heart to Heart - jhbreneman@juno.com
Our grown children and grandchildren need our love and time, so let's put balance into our busy schedules, and get back on those rocking chairs to rock the little ones when we are needed and spend time with the older grandchildren as well!
As busy as we all are, we can be Titus 2 women, available to mentor and encourage younger women in so many various ways. The Lord nudged my heart to do this early in 1999, when He began Heart to Heart. When we stop to think about it, most all of us would fit into the "older woman" category. We can almost all find at least one younger woman to encourage! I find that most younger women yearn for older women to walk along side of them and help guide them, drawing from our experience.
My heart smiles when I think of my Aunt Marian in Pennsylvania, who often encouraged and mentored me, as I babysat her four children many times. She also laughingly tells me how I crashed her sixteenth birthday party the evening I was born at home. She tells how my mother called Grandma that evening, and said she was having labor pains and to come quick! Grandma was a nurse, and a doctor was also going to be there for my birth. But Grandma left Aunt Marian's birthday party that evening in March to give moral support to her oldest daughter in a time of need and help me enter the world! Aunt Marian has since forgiven me for that, and we love sharing the same March birthday!
Aunt Marian was also more recently a mentor to young women in M.O.P.S., Mothers of Preschoolers, in her senior years, at a time when many older women think it's time to "have their turn" to do what they so desire. One blessed young woman whom Aunt Marian mentored was Julie Druck. My aunt also told Julie about the Heart to Heart Newsletter sent by her niece, and Julie subscribed. After receiving Heart to Heart for a year and corresponding with me on occasion, Julie realized she could also send a newsletter to encourage other women. She wrote to tell me how the Lord gave her a nudge as well, and I've enjoyed receiving her e-mail newsletter, A Heart for Home, for quite a few years now! So I like to think of Julie's newsletter as an "offspring" of Heart to Heart! ((Smile))
You will see a fun activity below, written by Julie, to do with your children or grandchildren, whether you homeschool them or not. We all teach, even if we think we are not teachers. I've used many of Julie's ideas with my grandchildren, and she has been a frequent contributor to this newsletter through the years.
A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT -- THE BUBBLE BLOWER
by Julie Druck, Editor of A Heart for Home Newsletter - aheartforhome-subscribe@welovegod.org - Used by permission
Wash and dry a 20 oz. soda bottle. Chill the dried bottle in the freezer for 5 minutes. Take the bottle out of the freezer and immediately place the mouth of the bottle into a glass of water. Without being squeezed, the bottle will blow underwater bubbles. Put the bottle back in the freezer for another 5 minutes. In the meantime, pour a little bubble solution (or make your own with 1/4 C. water and a few drops of dish soap) into a shallow bowl. When the bottle is ready, dip the mouth into the bubble solution and then sit the bottle upright. A bubble should immediately start to form. When the bubble bursts, redip the bottle and it should keep blowing bubbles until it nears room temperature.
Here’s the scientific explanation: The air inside the bottle gets cold, of course, from being in the freezer. The colder the air, the closer together the molecules get. Because colder air is denser than warmer air, you can fit more of it into the bottle. When you take the bottle out of the freezer, the air inside starts to warm up and expand. Since the bottle can’t contain it all, it escapes and pushes against the water in the glass (or the bubble solution on the mouth), creating bubbles.
PRECIOUS GEMS
Thanks, everyone, for your permission to include all these precious gems in Heart to Heart!
A story shared by my brother, Jim, and added to by my niece, Kelly Fritz, mom to Caydon, 1 year old ~ My brother shared this hilarious story about the time he was babysitting his grandson, Caydon, as his wife and daughter went out together for a few hours. Grandpa Jim was told by Kelly, that for lunch he could feed Caydon the leftovers from the night before - "the green stuff in the plastic container." Lunch time rolled around and smelling the unfamiliar "aroma," Caydon reluctantly opened his mouth for the spoonful of "green stuff," making a terrible face, and closing his mouth tightly, not receiving another bite! His Grandpa Jim offered him applesauce later, but Caydon drew back first, suspiciously examining the contents on the spoon from a distance.
Kelly added, "When Mom and I got back, we smelled garlic as soon as we walked into the door! I went to kiss Caydon, and he had really bad garlic breath, so I asked Dad what he fed him. Dad said, 'Ewwww! What do you feed him?!?!? He didn't like that disgusting green stuff!' It was basil pesto that I brought for our lunch! To Dad's defense, I freeze the pesto in baby food jars because it's a perfect size. So Caydon had part of our lunch, rather than his chicken, mashed potatoes and peas!" ~ Lois
My "kid-isms" for today: Ethan, 5 - "cockatooper" (cockatoo)
Madelyn, 3 - "broccomole" (guacamole) ~ Liz Smith in Washington
Dad and Vonni gave our girls chocolate covered macadamia nuts for Valentine's Day. The first time they had one, I bit one open so they could see there was a nut inside. I went in the other room and I could hear Raylie (4) say, "Mine has a seed in it!" Karlie (almost 7) says, "Just spit it out. That is what I did." Then after we got home, Karlie was asking me if she could have a "crack-a-damia" nut. ~ Julie Karsten in Washington
My teenage niece, Ally, has been living with our family, so she can finish her senior year at the same school. My daughter, Raylie (4) said, "Mom, now you have 3 kids!" I asked, "Where did the 3rd one come from?" She said, "Doe Doe." She calls her Auntie Heidi that. Raylie continued, "God gave you the other 2, and God gave Ally to Doe Doe." ~ Julie Karsten in Washington
Maddie (7): "Mommy, we don't like boys because they stink like mud!"
Mommy: "That's right, Honey. Stay away from those stinky boys!" ~ Amy Hurt in Virginia
When I asked Hallie (5) if she was being obedient, she cocked her head to the side and said (with a twinkle in her eye), "Does Charlie Daniels play a mean fiddle?" She just cracks me up. ~ Cherith Bollinger Moore in Texas

REASSURANCE

Dear Lord,
Could you spare some guardian angels to give me peace of mind
As my children wander from me and stretch the ties that bind?
You have heavenly legions, Father. Could You send me just a few
To guide my eager youngsters as I give them, Lord, to You?
Oh thank You, thank You, Father, and, oh, my glad heart sings.
I'm certain that just now I heard the swish of passing wings!

In the dim and distant past,
When life's tempo wasn't fast,
Grandma used to rock and knit,

When we were in a jam,
We could always count on Gram.
In the age of gracious living,
Grandma's life was one of giving.
((Smile))

A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT -- THE BUBBLE BLOWER
