Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?  Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!
 
1.  The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life. 
2.  The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
3.  The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
4.  The 4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.
5.  The 5th fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."
6.  The 6th fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that "We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
7.  The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
8.  The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day. 
9.  The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.  
10. The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
11.  The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
12.  The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
13.  The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nations motto, "In God We Trust."
 
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.  There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why. Share this with others who love the symbol of "Liberty and Freedom."
 
 
BUILDING HAPPY MEMORIES & FAMILY TRADITIONS

"When I was growing up, my father would make up stories for my brother and me.  We would each give him three words - sometimes related, sometimes not, sometimes serious, sometimes silly.  Sometimes the stories he made up had a moral to them; other times they were merely entertaining.  I hold fond memories of these story times designated just for us, since my father was a very busy man."
 
"When I was a child, my mother joined in our play at times when many mothers would have become angry, instead.  For example, my little brother and I  had been blowing bubbles in the kitchen.  Eventually this made the floor slippery.  We then began sliding around on the floor.  When Mom came to the door, she stood quietly at the door for a few seconds, sizing up the situation, then took off her shoes, took a running start, laughed, and slid past us all!  I've loved her for it ever since.  Her childlikeness is and was special.  (P.S.  After the play was over, we got to clean up the floor!)"
 
 
STARTING A TEEN BOOK STUDY GROUP

        If you're looking for a way to connect with your teenage daughter this summer, consider starting a girls' book study group with your daughter and her friends. 
        You may think that teens would not respond well to this idea, but think again ... just might be surprised. 
        First bounce the idea off your daughter and see what her thoughts are on the subject. If she shows any sign of interest, then brainstorm some possible book titles and/or topics. When my daughter and I started our group last summer, we had in mind to get some girls together from our church's high school youth group. So we talked about some of the books that people were reading at the time. 
        Next my daughter started calling her friends and acquaintances to see who she could interest in the idea. Almost everyone she talked to was interested in coming and liked the idea, but many were already busy with other summer activities. We narrowed the list to around four or five who committed to reading the book and getting together to talk about it. We all gave input into which book we wanted to read, and ended up with "What's So Amazing About Grace?" a popular nonfiction book by Phillip Yancey. 
        I broke the book down into three to four sections, and we decided to meet Wednesday evenings for six weeks. Overall, the study went very well, and it was very rewarding. We all have fond memories of it, and it was great to spend that quality time with my daughter. 
        If you think this is something you might be interested in doing, here are some tips I picked up along the way:

        * Don't take it personally if everyone doesn't come every week. Everyone has busy schedules and conflicts arise. Probably only one or two girls came every single week, even my daughter missed at least one. You'll find that conversations can greatly differ depending on the mix of girls, which is good! 
        * Meet in a relaxed setting so everyone is comfortable and doesn't feel like they're in a classroom. We took blankets to sit on down to a local park and had snacks every week. 
        * Don't pressure yourself into having to "lead" the group. You're not there to teach them, but only to facilitate the conversation. I found it helpful to choose a book that included group study questions. Some books have the questions in the back. This particular book had a companion study guide that had to be purchased separately. Just let the girls talk, and ask questions if there is a big lull in the conversation. Although you might be tempted to challenge "wrong" answers, let the girls challenge each other first and see what conclusions they come to. It is rare that you'll have to intercede. Instead of challenging someone directly, ask them more questions to help them reach a another answer. 
        * On the same note as the last point, don't feel you have to give advice or have all the right answers. Most teenagers love having someone, particularly adults, listen to their thoughts and feelings. They don't expect you to know everything, they just want you to listen. You'll find that the teens come from all different family backgrounds and don't always have other people to listen to them when they need to talk. 
        * Encourage girls to come to the discussions even if they didn't do their reading for the week. You'll find that most are embarrassed if they didn't do their "homework" and don't want to show up. Encourage them to come even if they didn't read it, to encourage fellowship among the girls. 
        * Dads can have book study groups with their teenage sons and their friends too! They may need to goof around some more and maybe burn off some energy before they get down to business (some kind of outdoor activity), but teenage guys like to get together and learn from each other also. 
        A book study group is a great way to get to know some of your teenager's friends. Encourage them to also invite people they don't know very well...people from school or work who they want to get to know better. It's a great way to make that first step towards friendship and teaches them to reach out to others.

MISCELLANEOUS TIME AND MONEY-SAVING TIPS

When your "To Do" List Gets Long and Sometimes Frustrating ~ I have this printed out and posted in a couple of places (my office, my kitchen).  Just a reminder of what to do when the "To Do" list gets long and sometimes frustrating. ~ From Margie DeMonbrun of Missouri 
 
HELPFUL "TO DO'S"

Clean as you go.
Have a place for everything.
Keep it simple.

Baking Soda for Laundry * ~ One tip that I have found to be extremely cost saving is to use Baking Soda in with the white laundry. I had found that I was bleaching the whites once a week and the fabrics were wearing out constantly. I now use bleach only once per month and the baking soda every week. It really works great! ~ Joan B.
 
Out of the Way * ~ My husband permanently installed a white plastic pipe in my shower, placing it well over the top of my head so it doesn't get in my way. Here I hang my delicates on hangers to drip dry in the shower. I've often wondered how I ever got along with it! ~ Elaine
 
Cleaning out Glass Thermos bottles * ~ Denture cleaning tablets can be used when food has been allowed to sit and harden in a glass Thermos.  Just be sure to thoroughly wash and rinse the Thermos before using.
First Job * ~ My son has been asking for this or that.  How can a five-year-old earn his own money (not allowance)?  I had him call his uncles, grandmothers and friends, asking them to save their aluminum cans, recyclable plastic, and glass bottles.  My son must sort these items into separate boxes lined with plastic trash bags.  Once every two weeks, he gathers the bags and we take them to the recycling center.  He must unload the bags and then he can collect the money.  He is learning the value of a dollar and that earning money can be difficult, labor intensive, and stinky.  He is also helping the planet.  He is saving HIS money for a family vacation, so he can purchase what he wants.  I have had two friends use this idea on their children as well! ~ Donna W.
 
Work-At-Home Tips * ~ Here are a few stay-at-home, money-earning ideas. I know these work because my friends or I are currently using them.  ~ Joanne G.)
 
1. Music Lessons - I have taught piano/organ/keyboard for the last 34 years. I currently earn $20 an hour or $10 per each 1/2 hour lesson. I work two eight-hour days.
 
2. Childcare - A friend used this when she had her baby and thereafter for about six years. She contacted the city/county/state for requirements and advice. There is a very great need for loving childcare.
 
3. Medical Transcription - Two of my friends are currently earning very high wages this way. Each went about getting set up in different ways. One took a junior college course and got started through a local hospital and local doctor's office doing take-home work. The other took a correspondence course and started working for a local doctor's office doing take-home work. The first now receives her work through Fed-Ex and sends it back through modem.
 
Note from Lois:
* If you have a skill such as sewing, you can supplement your income by doing custom sewing and/or alterations. 
* Some ladies like to make various crafts or quilts to sell.
* You might want to find a few houses to clean while your children are away at school.  Although this is not a job at home, it can be done while you aren't so needed by your children.  If you are homeschooling only one child, arrangements could be made to bring your child along with you.  He/she could do one or two simple jobs in that house, then work on lessons while you work.

Home Office Supply Start-Up * ~ I was putting together a home office in my house for a small
freelance business that I've started. Instead of heading to the nearest office supply super center for all my supplies, I hit garage sales in my neighborhood. I found plastic letter trays for 10 cents each (normally $2-3 each new), a good as new printing desk calculator with two rolls of paper for $2 ($20 and up new), a large paper cutter for $2, a stapler and box of staples for 50 cents, a large Rolodex for $1, and a thermal paper fax machine in working order with the manual for $10. Since I already had the computer and was able to build a desk from a large piece of pressboard and a file cabinet I already owned, the only things I had to buy new were file folders and paper clips.  I spent less than $30 on everything and my first freelance assignment more than covered the cost. I would never have thought about looking for office supplies at garage sales if a friend hadn't suggested it, but it worked out great! ~ HDC
 
Return to Sender * ~ This is a great way to save on postage.  If you're sending a get well card to someone who is temporarily hospitalized or in a rehab facility, put the ill person's return address instead of your own return address on the envelope.  This way if he/she goes home before receiving the card, it will "come back" to him/her, rather than to you. ~ Pat S.
 
Book Rate ~ The book rate for mailing is often less expensive than for mailing other package items.  Be sure to write "Book Rate" on the package.  When mailing cloth books as baby gifts recently I wrote, "Book Rate" on the package, with "Cloth Book" below it.  To send anywhere in the US, the cost is as follows:
Up to 1# ($1.42) ; up to 2# ($1.84): up to 3# ($2.26); up to 4# ($2.68); up to 5# ($3.10). ~ Lois 
 
Postage Rate List ~ The next time you go to your post office, ask for "Notice 123" which is several pages of all the postal rates.  This is good to keep handy. ~ Lois
 
Postal Scales Saves Trips to Post Office and Waiting in Line ~ If you have a small postal scales in your home, you can save many trips to the post office.  I asked for one for Christmas several years ago.  (Pelouze - Model K5 which has a capacity of up to 5 #'s. - about $16). When I insert additional items in with a card, I weigh it to make sure it doesn't go over one ounce.  If it does though, another 37 cent stamp isn't needed.  Only the first ounce requires 37 cents.  Each additional ounce requires only 23 cents (a stamp for sending a postcard).  At least this is the rate as of June, 2004!  Then I buy plenty of interesting and pretty stamps to stick on packages to mail from home, including one and two cent stamps. ~ Lois
 
Fun with One and Two Cent Stamps ~ When our one son sends cards to us or his grandma, he sometimes has fun lining the envelopes with one cent stamps!  It always brings a smile!  On occasion I do the same thing back to him. ~ Lois
 
Home-Baked Goodness * ~ If you know a lot of high school graduates and would like to send something but can't afford a lot, a cute and inexpensive gift is a "cookie card." For those going away to school, I put in my card a few postcards I have made on my computer. The postcard has a funny greeting, my name and address, and stamp already on it. When they drop it back in the mail to me with their address, I send them a small batch of cookies. A small cereal box makes a great packing box. This has always been a big hit in the past and usually redeemed within the first few months. Sending a batch of cookies is usually less than I would pay for another gift, and I don't have to spend a lot at once. Even students living at home and going to the local community college love it! ~ Gretchen 
 
Special Calendar as a Wedding Gift * ~ One of the most appreciated wedding presents I've ever given cost me not much except time.  I bought a calendar and called the relatives of the bride and groom. I asked for the birthdays and anniversaries in each family and wrote them into the calendar.  That way, the couple wouldn't miss important dates (that one might know about but the other might not) in their new life together. ~ Andrea K.
 
Framed Memory Board as a Wedding Gift ~ If you enjoy rubber stamping, this is a gift you might enjoy doing.  At the wedding of our daughter and son-in-law, my sister-in-law, June Walker, asked all the wedding guests to write a short message for the bride and groom on a heavy posterboard during their reception.  She had previously written the names of the bride and groom and the wedding date at the top in a creative way.  She walked around the room, encouraging all the guests to write a brief message to the bride and groom, as she pointed them to a specially decorated table where she had various colored pens available.  Some messages or memories were serious and others were humorous, but it was beautifully filled with colorful messages.  Afterwards June used rubber stamps depicting love, marriage, as well as hobbies and interests of the bride and groom to fill in any small empty spaces with decorations.  Then she added glass and framed it.  My daughter has remarked many times how that was her favorite wedding gift, because of the personal touch from each wedding guest and it has always hung at a visible place in their home. ~ Lois
 
 
A BEAUTIFUL ANGEL FOOD CAKE!

Alice was to bake a cake for the church ladies' group bake sale, but she forgot to do it until the last minute. She baked an angel food cake and when she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat.  She said, "Oh dear, there's no time to bake another cake."   So, she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake.  Alice found it in the bathroom ... a roll of toilet paper!  She plunked it in and covered it with icing. The finished product looked beautiful, so she rushed it to the church.  Alice then gave her daughter some money and instructions to be at the sale the minute it opened and to buy that cake and bring it home.
When the daughter arrived at the sale ... the attractive cake had already been sold!  Alice was beside herself.  A couple of days later, Alice was invited to a friend's home where two tables of bridge were to be played that afternoon. After the game a fancy lunch was served, and to top it off, the cake in question was presented for dessert!  When Alice saw the cake, she started to get out of her chair to rush into the kitchen to tell her hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, one of the other ladies said, "What a beautiful cake!"  Alice sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess (a prominent church member) say , "Thank you!  I baked it myself."
 

MELT-IN-YOUR-MOUTH TURKEY BREAST, BEEF ROAST OR CHICKEN ~ EASY!
Delicious and extremely easy!  Makes the whole house smell like dinner is on the way!
 
First spray your crockpot with Pam to prevent easier clean-up.  If you skip this step, the crock will still get clean with soaking in hot soapy water, so don't let that stop you from trying this!  Put a large turkey breast, beef roast or whole chicken in the crockpot.  Using a small bowl, mix one can of cream of mushroom soup and dried onion soup mix together.  Spread over the meat in the crockpot.  That's it!  Cover.  Turn on LOW for 10-12 hours.  If you start late, use HIGH.  Makes its own gravy! 
 
Notes:
*This recipe also works great with a whole chicken or boneless skinless chicken breasts.
*Turkey breasts have less work (boning) and fat than whole chickens and are very economical.
*Other creamed soups may be substituted for cream of mushroom.
*To save money, purchase cream soups at 50 cents a can and a box of dried onion soup mix (2 packets for 50 cents) at Dollar General.  Often grocery stores sell turkey breasts for 89 or 99 cents per pound, so that's the time to stock up.  Watch for sales on beef as well.
*Serve with baked or mashed potatoes and a vegetable - maybe a salad or applesauce on the side.
*If you have never tried this recipe, I'm sure it will be one of your favorite stand-bys!
*Save leftover meat in a freezer bag for quick meals later.
*If you don't have a crockpot, you can prepare this in a covered Dutch oven or roaster in your oven at 275 degrees for about 8-10 hours.  Check on it during cooking time.  You may need to add about a cup of water for extra moistness if cooking in the oven.
*For added moistness, prick a lemon, lime or orange and insert into a turkey breast before cooking.  The citrus will not flavor the meat, but will add extra moisture.
* To avoid eating fat in the hot gravy, refrigerate broth and spoon off the fat that rises to the top.  Or use a gravy pitcher from a Kitchen Specialty Shop, designed to pour broth from the bottom of the pitcher, after the hot fat has settled on top, so you can avoid pouring the fat.

When our cat died my kids were 5 and 3.   They found Georgie under my husband's truck, where she had fallen asleep and never woke. She had been sick. My daughter and I were very upset but my son was 3 and didn't really understand death.  The little neighbor girl, 4 years old at the time, told my son that it was okay because Georgie was in heaven.  He came running in to me and said that everything was going to be okay because Georgie had found heaven and it was under Daddy's truck. -- Robin, 37, from NC

        Did you know that everything He does and plans in relation to you is for the purpose of bringing you ever closer to Him so that He can reveal His glory and His goodness to you?
        Did you know that He is more interested in you and in your well being than in what you do?
        Did you know that His overall desire for you is to bring you into His secret place and cause you to abide under the shadow of His protection and provision?
        If you really knew these truths and believed them from your heart, you could never really doubt Him, no matter what is going on right now in your life, but you would be at peace even in the worst times of your life.
